Maxwell is a character in EarthBound. He is an older, more experienced student at the Snow Wood Boarding House. When Jeff tries to open the lockers, he finds that they are locked, so Maxwell gives him a key. The key is busted however, so Maxwell gives him the "Machine that Opens Doors, especially when you have a slightly bad key".

Jeff also calls Maxwell to save his game while he travels alone, instead of Ness's father.

Trivia

• His English name is likely a reference to James Clerk Maxwell, a famous scientist and mathematician; whereas his Japanese name likely is a reference to Carl Friedrich Gauss, who also is a famous scientist and mathematician.
