Winters is a country in EarthBound. It is located in the north of the region of FoggyLand. Winters is the home of Jeff, one of Ness's allies who accompanies him to defeat Giygas. According to Shigesato Itoi, the country is based off of England.

Winters has a population of 506 people, not including the 1,200 Tessie watchers, 2 goats, an average temperature of 1°F and wind chill of -22°F. The average age of people is 13 years old.[1]

Overview

Winters is located in the northernmost area of FoggyLand. Implied by the name, the region is very cold and is constantly layered with a blanket of snow. Due to its cold climate, not many people live or visit the country, with most of the population of the country being the Tessie watchers of Lake Tess and students of the Snow Wood Boarding House. The country, however, is famous for being home of the renowned scientist Dr. Andonuts. Rumors of a sea monster named Tessie have been known far and wide, as such a group of people who call themselves the Tessie watchers have camped on the lake shore in hopes if spotting Tessie.

A large lake named Lake Tess seperates the northern half from the southern half. The Snow Wood Boarding School is located on the north half, while the south is where Dr. Andonuts' lab is found. Most of the population is on the northern half of Winters as that is where the Snow Wood Boarding House is located. On the southern half, the dungeon maker Brick Road created an artificial dungeon which is required on the first visit, however it can be bypassed later by using the Pencil eraser to erase the pencil statue near the entrance. Near Dr. Andonuts' lab is also Stonehenge, which is based off of its real-world counterpart and has a large enemy base under it, and Pond Cave where the Rainy Circle Sanctuary is found.

Geography

Winters is located in the north of Foggyland, a region to the east of Eagleland. Winters is a cold, snowey region with natural surroundings, making it a stark contrast to Summers south of it. Winters itself is rather large area surrounded by forests, hills and a large lake. The northern half of Winters is separated from the southern half by a large lake where a sea monster dubbed Tessie lives. Many caves are located on the southern half, including an artificial cave created by the dungeon maker Brick Road. Pond Cave, however, houses the fourth Sanctuary of the game, Rainy Circle.

History

Concept art of Jeff and Bubble Monkey approaching Lake Tess.

Winters is first introduced to the story after Ness and Paula are locked underneath the graveyard in Threed, when Paula contacts Jeff telepathically to help them. Jeff awoke in Snow Wood Boarding House and knew he had to leave. At this point the player takes control of Jeff and his roommate Tony. After leaving with the Bad key machine, the two are stopped by the gate of the school. Jeff climbs on Tony's back, and the two part ways. Jeff then has to traverse through Winters to get to Threed to rescue the friends he had never met. Along the way, he meets Bubble Monkey who follows him on his journey south. The two of them spend the night on the shore of Lake Tess. The next morning, they awake and find Tessie emerging from the lake. Bubble Monkey blows a bubble with his bublegum and floats onto Tessie, where he and Jeff ride Tessie to the southern half.

Back on dry ground they find the Brick Road Maze created by dungeon maker Brick Road. After completing it, they meet Brick Road himself who is working with Dr. Andonuts to become the first human-dungeon hybrid. Jeff then meets with his father Dr. Andonuts for the first time in 10 years. Dr. Andonuts offers him the Sky Runner to use as transportation to Threed.

After rescuing Paula from Geldegarde Monotoli, Ness, Paula and Jeff learn that they must go to Summers to advance their journey. They returned to Threed to repair the damaged Sky Runner so that they could return to Winters to get Dr. Andonuts to modify it so they could travel to Summers. While doing so, the group went to investigate Pond Cave near Stonehenge. There, they fought Shrooom! to get the melody of Rainy Circle.

Later, the group had to return to Winters to help save Apple Kid. They then teleported to Winters, and had to go down the same path that Jeff had to take originally to get to Dr. Andonuts's lab, where Apple Kid was last. Ness and his friends will find much stronger enemies than Jeff had at first. After making it to the lab, Apple Kid's mouse will hand over the Eraser eraser to get into Stonehenge base. After saving everyone from the Starman DX, they returned to Dr. Andonuts's lab.
