Overview

Concept art of the Lost Underworld, with a Chomposaur and a Wetnosaur towering over Ness and company.

The Lost Underworld first appears after defeating the Electro Specter and gaining the melody of Lumine Hall. It is used as the only exit from Lumine Hall. The party lands in the south east area. When Ness and his friends first go to the Lost Underworld, the player can notice that the sprites of the characters are noticeably smaller, emphasizing the largeness of the area. Inside, Ness will find dinosaurs, showing that the area is almost unknown and untouched by time. There are also geysers that shoot out blue or red water, healing HP and Status Ailments respectively. Talking to the Tenda villagers here will show that the dinosaurs are actually in "cages", although it appears that the Tendas are in the cages. Ness and his friends must reach the end to get to Fire Spring and record the eighth melody.

Role in EarthBound

After recording the melody of Lumine Hall, the team jump into a hole dropping them deep into the Lost Underworld. They find the land is untouched by modern time with dinosaurs running rampart. They find another village inhabited by Tendas and are let in by giving the Tendakraut obtained from the Tenda Village above. Inside, a talking rock provides an inspiration speech for Ness while recapping the Sanctuaries he had visited prior, while also revealing the final Sanctuary, the Fire Spring, found in the far west of the Lost Underworld. With this knowledge, the team set out to find the Fire Spring and collect the final Melody.

On the way, the team is able to find a cave leading to a mysterious cave with views of a mysterious spire as well as a destroyed machine.
