The Teddy Bears are unique battle items found only in EarthBound. They appear of the regular Teddy Bear (Japanese: ぬいぐるみ Plush) and the Super Plush Bear (Japanese: つよいぬいぐるみ Strong Plush). Their purpose is to take an enemy's attack for of the player.
Usage
When a Teddy Bear is in the possession of any party member, it is indicated by the Teddy Bear's sprite appearing on the overworld. When in battle, enemies will often attack the Teddy Bear instead of one of the party members. They can absorb any attack from the enemy, including attacks that target the whole party, with the following attacks being rendered unsuccessful if the Teddy Bear was targeted:
Though they are unaffected by Lifeup and Healing, Shields (including PSI Shields) which affect the entire party will be applied to the Teddy Bear.
Teddy Bears have a set amount of HP (100 for the Teddy Bear and 400 for the Super Plush Bear), once their HP runs out they will be reduced to a pile of fluff and disappear from the party member's inventory. Only the first Teddy Bear in the inventory will be affected in battle, once it gets destroyed the next Teddy Bear in the inventory will take its place. If a Teddy Bear were to be deposited into the closet, its HP will be fully restored the next time it is withdrawn.
