In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Spirits are powerups featured extensively in Adventure Mode: World of Light. While similar to Stickers in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Equipment in Super Smash Bros. 4, Spirits are representations of characters that fighters can assign to themselves for in-battle buffs and benefits. In Ultimate, there are 1,303 Spirits of varying types and franchises.

There are currently 28 Spirits in Ultimate that represent the Mother series, with characters from all three games — Mother, EarthBound, and Mother 3 — showing up as Spirits. Among these are represenations of the two playable Mother characters: Lucas and Ness. Other Spirits are party members such as Paula, Jeff, Kumatora, and Duster, secondary characters such as Buzz Buzz, Flying Man, Flint, and Salsa, or enemies such as Starman, Master Belch, or the Absolutely Safe Capsule.

Functionality

There are four classes of Spirits in Ultimate. Primary Spirits can be equipped by a fighter, enhancing their stats. A Primary Spirit has strengths based on type: Attack, Shield, and Grab, and Neutral. All types except Neutral are powerful against another type: ergo, Attack is effective against Grab, Grab is effective against Shield, and Shield is effective over Attack.

Support Spirits are enabled by a Primary Spirit, which allows up to three Support Spirits for a fighter. Support Spirits will usually give a fighter a skill in battle: EarthBound-related skills range between giving a fighter a Franklin Badge skill (reflects all enemy projectiles) and allowing a fighter to begin a battle holding a Ramblin' Evil Mushroom.

Fighter Spirits cannot be equipped, and serve as a viewable image of a character. They are representations of fighters in Ultimate. Master Spirits also cannot be equipped, but give the player access to certain facilities, such as shops, gyms, or dojos.

Most Spirits are obtained via Spirit Battles: where fighters represent the Spirit in a themed stage. For example, earning Hinawa's spirit requires that the player battle Zelda and two Lucas fighters, and earning Teddy's spirit requires that the player battle Little Mac. Once owned, a Spirit can be leveled up to increase its benefits in battle. Some Spirits will change into a new Spirit at level 99, giving the player better stats.
