PK Freeze is a PSI attack, introduced in EarthBound Beginnings. It has a variety of effects between games, but the most common effect is hitting a single enemy for ice-based damage. PK Freeze is learned by Ana in EarthBound Beginnings, Paula and Poo in EarthBound, and Kumatora in Mother 3.

PK Freeze is depicted as an ice based PSI power attacking a target to do ice damage. The effectiveness of PK Freeze differs depending on the enemy, as enemies associated with cold are more resistant to it, and enemies associated with heat are more vulnerable to it. Additionally characters with the Fire Pendant (in EarthBound Beginnings) or Rain Pendant (in EarthBound) equipped will be resistant to it.

PK Freeze's main purpose is to be a single-target PSI attack with a high damage output, with tiers attacking only a single target. Starting with EarthBound it has a chance of freezing the target to prevent them from moving for 1 turn, and has a chance of reducing a PSI Shield's strength by 1. In EarthBound and Mother 3 it has the highest damage output of the main elemental PSI attacks, in EarthBound it is rivaled by PSI Rockin Ω and PK Starstorm Ω.

In EarthBound Beginnings PK Freeze is slightly different, in that Ω targets all opponents instead of one, although all other tiers are single target. PK Freeze is also noticeably weaker than in succeeding, the exception is PK Freeze γ which lowers the target's HP to "critical situation" to the point where almost any weak attack will defeat them.

Learnset and damage output

In EarthBound Beginnings

Rank Effect PP Characters Level learned
α 8-15 points of damage to one enemy 3 Ana 2
β 36-45 points of damage to one enemy 5 Ana 8
γ Reduces one enemy's HP to critical status 8 Ana 21
Ω 50-80 points of damage to all enemies 13 Ana 29

In EarthBound

Rank Effect PP Characters Level learned
α 135-225 points of damage to one enemy 4 Paula
β 270-450 points of damage to one enemy 9 Paula
γ 405-675 points of damage to one enemy 18 Paula
Ω 540-900 points of damage to one enemy 28 Paula 46
  • Earthbound added 25% chance to solidify an enemy to all levels of PK Freeze

In Mother 3

Rank Effect PP Characters Level learned
α 120-140 points of damage to one enemy 5 Kumatora 7
β 200-230 points of damage to one enemy 10 Kumatora 28
γ 320-350 points of damage to one enemy 18 Kumatora 38
Ω 450-480 points of damage to one enemy 28 Kumatora 51
  • PK Freeze's damage is affected by the enemy's resistance to freeze according to the formula Actual Damage = (Base Damage) x (Enemy Weakness) / 100. If Kumatora uses PK Freeze α on a Carpet Monster, which has a freeze weakness of 80, it will do between 96 and 112 points of damage.
  • Solidification effect returns. Like most status ailments in Mother 3, PK Freeze has a base chance to solidify, modified by an enemy's inherent weakness to being solidified, according to the formula Actual Success Rate = (Base Success Rate) x (Enemy Weakness) / 100. PK Freeze's base chance to solidify is 8. If used on a Carpet Monster, which has a Freezing weakness of 100, the enemy will solidify 8% of the time.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, PK Freeze is Lucas's neutral special move. By holding the special attack button, the player can angle the freeze attack and releasing it will cause the attack to activate. Any fighters caught in the blast will be frozen and shot into the air. However, the attack will leave Lucas vulnerable and it won't work if it hits the ground.

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, Ness can use the attack as one of his custom moves. He also uses a different voice clip.
