The Benevolent Old Man is a character in EarthBound Beginnings, who resides in Magicant.
Appearance
When Ninten or Ana uses Telepathy on the fountain in the northwestern portion of Magicant, the Benevolent Old Man will hear their "soulful cry" and appear in the fountain. When interacted with, he asks Ninten if he was the one calling on him. In the Japanese Famicom version of Mother, he offers to cure party members that have been poisoned or turned into stone. This was changed in the English release and Mother 1+2 port, where instead he would function similar to an ATM, mentioning the current amount of money in Ninten's bank account and letting him withdraw money as long as it doesn't exceed the amount available in his account. Money, however, cannot be deposited. As he is part of Magicant, the Benevolent Old Man will disappear with Magicant when Queen Mary rests in peace.
The change was made because complete status healing is already available in Magicant, but ATMs are completely absent.[1]
