Pollyanna

Pollyanna as "A Certain Someone's Memories" in Mother 3.

Pollyanna is a recurring song in the Mother series, and often regarded as one the franchise's main themes. The term Pollyanna has a connection to the idea of permanent optimism, certainly applicable to the song's lyrics. It also references a classic children book by the same name.

The song first appeared as the overworld theme in EarthBound Beginnings when Ninten is travelling on his own (i.e., before Lloyd joins him and he is not traveling with Pippi). When another character joins him, Bein' Friends plays instead.

In EarthBound, a short clip of Pollyanna plays as Ness leaves the Minch household after the death of Buzz Buzz before the Onett theme begins. A version of the track also plays whenever Ness returns to his house in Onett, and also plays in the Polestar Preschool in Twoson after Paula is rescued. Another short clip of the song introduces "Good Friends, Bad Friends," the song used for the game's cast roll.

The song reappears near the very end of Mother 3 when Lucas and company discover a room full of objects from EarthBound at the top of Empire Porky Building in Chapter 8, under the title "A Certain Someone's Memories" (track #238 in the Sound Player).

A remix of the tune appears as the alternate track for the Onett stage in Super Smash Bros. Melee under the title "Mother 2", reappearing in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Versions of the song also appear on the soundtracks Mother, Mother 1+2, and Mother 3+. In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, the title has been reverted back to "Pollyanna" and returns as default music for the Onett stage.

Lyrics

The tune was given words on the vocal soundtrack for Mother, and appeared as the first track of that album. The song was given the full title "Pollyanna (I Believe in You)" and was performed by Catherine Warwick.

I believe the morning sun
Always gonna shine again and
I believe a pot of gold
Waits at every rainbow's end
I believe in roses kissed with dew
Why shouldn't I believe the same in you?

I believe in make believe
Fairy tales and lucky charms and
I believe in promises
Spoken as you cross your heart
I believe in skies forever blue
Why shouldn't I believe the same in you?

You may say I'm a fool
Feelin' the way that I do
You can call me Pollyanna
Say I'm crazy as a loon
I believe in silver linings
And that's why I believe in you

I believe there'll come a day
Maybe it will be tomorrow
When the bluebird flies away
All we have to do is follow
I believe a dream can still come true
Why shouldn't I believe the same in you?

You may say I'm a fool
Feelin' the way that I do
I believe in friends and laughter
And the wonders love can do
I believe in songs and magic
And that's why I believe in you

You may say I'm a fool
Feelin' this way about you
There's not much I can do
I'm gonna be this way my life through
'Cause I still believe in miracles
I swear I've seen a few
And the time will surely come
When you can see my point of view
I believe in second chances
And that's why I believe in you
