According to the beginning of {{vg|Mother}}, she and George were abducted by aliens in the year 1906. George managed to escape two years later, but was unable to rescue Maria. As a result, she spent most of her life taking care of an infant [[Giegue]], the game's primary villain.

She is a major driving force in the plot of Mother; the [[Eight Melodies]] is a lullaby that she sang to Giegue and the bulk of the plot revolves around learning said melody. It is later revealed that the character [[Queen Mary]] is the embodiment of Maria's consciousness and that Magicant is a mirage created from it. During the final battle, when using the [[check]] command, Maria's consciousness informs Ninten's party that the only thing that may defeat Giegue is to sing her [[Eight Melodies|lullaby]] with all of their heart.
