Protection is a wiki tool that only Administrators can use on most wikis. It locks specific groups of users from editing a page. There are two types of protection, that being established users only and sysop only. The first type only allows autoconfirmed users to edit. The second allows only those with Oddball status (on this wiki) and higher to edit pages. A protection can be set to any time, and any protected page can be unprotected prior to its expiration date.

Why was a page protected?

There are several reasons a page is protected:

  • Repeated vandalism
  • Critical wiki page (a page which describes elements about the wiki, such as this page, for example)
  • Template overuse (a template which can cause severe server stress if edited, such as the stub template)
