Kumatora (Japanese: クマトラ Kumatora) is one of the main characters in Mother 3. She is a teenager residing on the Nowhere Islands. Kumatora was orphaned at a very young age and was raised by Magypsies, who have also assisted in her learning PSI. Unlike Ana and Paula, Kumatora is a cut-and-dry example of a tomboy.

Biography

In contrast to the Magypsies who raised her, Kumatora’s appearance would be considered much more boyish. Her “princess” regalia is simply a periwinkle hoodie that comes down to her knees, much like a dress, and is rather plain except for some light blue accents. While her boots are bright magenta, they are plain as well. She keeps her hair in a messy pixie-cut style.

In game, she is shown to use gloves as her signature weapon.

From her first appearance in Osohe Castle, Kumatora is shown to be a bit reckless. She requires Duster’s help to break free from a bear trap she found herself stuck in, but quickly proves herself to be a valuable party member. Her impulsiveness can show through occasionally in her dialogue, often cursing or insulting other characters; such as calling Fassad a “cheap bastard.”

Despite her headstrong nature, Kumatora is still willing to make sacrifices in order to meet her goals. She willingly went undercover at Club Titiboo as a waitress named Violet in order to investigate the bassist of DCMC and the Pigmasks. As Violet, Kumatora expressed much disdain for having to dress up in more feminine clothing-- changing as soon as she, Lucas, and Boney had found the answers they were looking for.

She is shown to be kind and heroic as well, accompanying Lucas and their party across the Nowhere Islands, and freeing Salsa from Fassad’s abuse.

History

Warning! Spoiler warning: this article or section may contain major plot or ending details! Proceed with caution.

Kumatora first arrived on the Nowhere Islands via the White Ship when she was an infant, and had no parents to take care of her. The Magypsies, primarily Ionia, decided to raise her and teach her various skills, including PSI. Her role in Tazmily Village's "story" was to be the princess of Osohe Castle, with Duster and Wess being her retainers.

She first appeared in person in Chapter 2, during Duster's search of Osohe Castle for the Egg of Light. He first saw her briefly dropping down from the ceiling and running off, but had dropped her special pendant. On Duster's second trip to the castle with Wess, the two later found Kumatora with her leg caught in a trap. She did not recognize the two at first, firing off PK Freeze in self-defense, although she quickly noticed Wess and apologized for the confusion. Wess freed her leg from the trap, and she decided to go with them to make sure the Egg of Light was safe. Upon reaching the Egg of Light Kumatora and the others get ambushed by the Pigmasks, she quickly grabs the Egg before Wess warns that he laid a trap that activates when the Egg is grabbed. The trap sends them to the castle basement where they are attacked by the Oh-So-Snake. After beating it the water drains and they are swept away onto a beach outside the castle. Kumatora gets woken up by Lighter and Fuel then heads to a disbutes in Tazmily Village. They notice Duster is missing with Kumatora noting that he might be in danger.

In Chapter 3, she is seen during the disbute in Tazmily Village which was about Butch realizing his money was stolen. She telepathically communicates with Salsa during that moment. She appears later with Wess and frees Salsa of his shock collar, and helps him out against the Pigmask Army. Kumatora and the others plan to escape the Pigmasks, however the others and up running first thinking Kumatora already gave the signal. They reach the Sunshine Forest but get trapped by the Pigmask tanks. Soon Lucas arrives to save them, allowing Kumatora to meet him for the first time in this chapter, when he calls for a Drago to destroy various Pigmask tanks.

Three years later, Kumatora has started working as a waitress for Club Titiboo under the name Violet. She hates the job, however, having to act very feminine and dress up in a highly feminine outfit. Kumatora puts up with it, only working there to get more info on DCMC's mysterious bassist, Lucky. Lucky heavily resembles Duster, who has gone missing for three years, and she was concerned if it really was him. She also meets with Lucas again, who has grown stronger since they had last met. She helps him and Boney get into Club Tittiboo to inform them about who could potentially be Duster, as well as the current state of the Islands. Kumatora guides Lucas and Boney into the attic to reach Lucky's dressing room, while she takes out the security

Once Duster is convinced to go with Lucas and his friends to search for the Egg of Light, she decides to travel with Lucas and accompany him on his journeys. In Chapter 5 she accompanies the team in search for the Egg of Light, which Duster hid in the Unknown Valley. She disguises herself as a Pigmask to assist Lucas in finding the malfunctioning Clayman who has the Egg. Once the Egg is found, she and the rest infiltrate Thunder Tower to shut down the source if Tazmily Village's abnormal lightning strikes. At the top of the tower after shutting it down, she escapes with the others by grabbing onto Rope Snake clinging onto the aircraft, however they all fall off and are scattered accross the Islands.

In Chapter 7, Kumatora was found by Doria in the Murasaki Forest where one of the Seven Needles is located. She learns how Lucas must pull the Seven Needles to save the Nowhere Islands, and decides to join him to help him on his mission. She meets up with Salsa again, who gives her a nut as a goodbye gift. After this, she accompanies Lucas in the journey to pull the Seven Needles accross the Nowhere Islands to put an end to the Pigmasks' schemes. In Chapter 8 she and her friends reach the headquarters of the Pigmasks in New Pork City. Here she learns about the shocking history of the Nowhere Islands and about the mastermind Porky Minch, and then she helps storm the Empire Porky Building to defeat Porky and help Lucas pulls the final Needle.

Kumatora as she appears in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Kumatora first appeared in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a sticker. Attaching the sticker to Ness or Lucas's trophy in the Subspace Emissary raises their PK attack by 11. Additionally, she is mentioned in Lucas's PK Starstorm trophy.

She later appeared in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate where appears alongside Lucas and Boney when PK Starstorm is used as Lucas. Kumatora also has an Attack type Spirit which has a secondary effect of boosting PSI power.

Trivia

  • Kumatora's name means "Bear-tiger" in Japanese ("Kuma"=bear; "Tora"=tiger).
  • If the player gives Kumatora the name "Violet", she will instead be named "Kumatora" when disguised as a waitress.
  • Kumatora is the only female party member in the series to not have frying pans as her primary weapon, her weapon instead are gloves.
  • If Kumatora is made the lead party member via the Debug Room and the player gets a game over, she does not appear in the game over screen and instead placeholder dummy sprite appears in the top left corner rather than of Kumatora lying beaten. This error only occurs when Kumatora is the lead party member.
  • Kumatora has an unused sprite resembling her waitress disguise, as well as the clothes the Magypsys wear.
