Happy Happy Village is a location in EarthBound, appearing on the east side of Peaceful Rest Valley. It is the third town that Ness visits. The town is set in a rural location a good distance away from the inner cities. The village is found within a valley and is surrounded by mountains and trees. The normally peaceful village fell into a bizarre religious cult led by Mr. Carpainter, resulting in all the buildings and trees to be painted blue. Found within the village is also one of the Sanctuaries, Lilliput Steps

Overview

Happy Happy Village is relatively small, but still is big enough for a drug store to be located inside of it. There is also Mr. Carpainter's house at the top and a shop where Ness can choose whether or not to pay for food as it runs on trust. If Ness chooses not to, he must fight a villager, called the Unassuming Local Guy, who spies on the shop because he, unlike many of the others living in the town, does not carry trust for the residents or other villagers. Near the entrance a villager will ask for donations from Ness, and if he declines, she will follow him throughout the village. In the Meager Livin' Farm to the south is an inn where Ness can stay for $50 and an agreement to convert to Happy-happyism.

There is a large building in the middle, which is a religious building for Happy-happyism, and the location of the Mani-Mani Statue until Carpainters defeat. There is also a cow painted blue inside a fenced in area to the south of the town. The jail where Paula is located is outside of the town, but is still in the general vicinity. Once the village is freed from Happy-happyism, the town will be reverted back to its non-blue state with the villagers waking up apologizing for their behavior.

The west exit leads to Peaceful Rest Valley and serves as a route to Twoson. There is a cave twords the north east of the town, which leads to Lilliput Steps.

History

Ness comes to the area when he receives a message from Paula asking him to save her. When Ness first arrives in town, it has become subject to Happy-happyism run by Mr. Carpainter and Porky Minch as one of the high ranks. The main members of the cult are dressed in blue outfits and perform regular "Blue Blue" chants, with the residents following along. Ness finds that the Happy Happyists have kidnapped Paula and plan to make her the high priestess of Happy-happyism. Ness finds Paula in a cabin outside of town where she gives him the Franklin Badge to confront Mr. Carpainter. He enters the prayer building in the center of town where the members of Happy-happyism are having a gathering.

After navigating through the gathering he meets Mr. Carpainter on the second floor. Carpainter fires a lightning attack, but Ness is protected by his Franklin Badge which deflects the attack. After a battle, Mr. Carpainter reveals that he had fallen under the control of the Mani-Mani Statue to set up the cult. He apologizes and gives Ness the Key to the cabin to free Paula, then disbands Happy-happyism. Outside, Porky also offers an apology before revealing he was lying and runs away.

After releasing Paula from the cabin, Ness and Paula then enter the cave to Lilliput Steps to collect the melody.
