Map of Chommo, Dalaam is known as Ramma in Japan.

Chommo (Japanese: チョンモ Chommo) is a region in EarthBound. It is geographically located south of Foggyland and southeast of Eagleland. Chommo is the last region Ness and his friends visit in the game. It is the home region of Prince Poo. Dalaam and Scaraba are located in the Chommo region.

Geography

Chommo is the easternmost region of the world of EarthBound. Its geography matches that of Asia.
Alternative artwork of Chommo, which shows Scaraba is part of it.

Chommo is the eastmost region in the world of EarthBound. The region is mostly mountains and desert, while having a dark swamp in the southmost part. Being a mountainous and desert region, Chommo does not have many civilized cities and towns. The only cities that appeared in EarthBound in Chommo are Dalaam and Scaraba. Dalaam is located high in the mountains and is where Prince Poo lives. Scaraba is the desert part of the region. To the south of Scaraba is a large desert with many pyramids. Across a body of water is a dark swamp known as Deep Darkness, the darkness is very thick and requires the Hawk Eye to navigate. It is thought that because Deep Darkness, and by extension Tenda Village, is part of Chommo, the Lost Underworld could be part of Chommo by extension, however this is unconfirmed.

The real-world counterpart to Chommo is the continent of Asia, however Scaraba's inclusion implies it to also extend to Northern Africa. Dalaam's geographical location matches that of China[1] while the architecture draws inspiration from the Middle East and India, in terms of the latter the most notable being the elephant statues outside of Poo's palace. Scaraba shares resemblance, geographical features, and history to that of Africa or the Middle East, the southern portion is based off of Egypt, with the pyramids and The Sphinx being based off of their real-life counterparts. Deep Darkness appears to be based off of southeast Asia based on its swampy climate, and also the inclusion of the Demonic Petunia, which in Japan is named Devil Rafflesia, as the rafflesia is a plant that grows in southeast Asia.

Locations

Chommo is seperates into three areas: Dalaam, Scaraba, and Deep Darkness.

Map Area Description
MapofDalaam.png Dalaam Dalaam is located in the far east of Chommo and the world of EarthBound. Dalaam is situated high up in the mountains which extend above the clouds, it is a small, rural town compared to others. Dalaam is the home of Poo, one of Ness's party members, who is also the prince of Dalaam. One of the sanctuaries is also located in here.
Scaraba.png Scaraba Scaraba is a large desert located south of FoggyLand, and most likely west of Dalaam. North of Scaraba is a small town while south is a group of pyramids. The southern most pyramid (known as "The Pyramid") holds the Hawk Eye item, which is vital to get through Deep Darkness. The Pyramid is also the only way of getting to the southern half of the desert where Dungeon Man resides.
DeepDarknessMap.png Deep Darkness Deep Darkness is a swamp located near Scaraba, which is accessed by taking a yellow submarine found inside Dungeon Man. It is very dark here, to where the only way to navigate through it is with the Hawk Eye. The waters are very deep to the point where party members will take damage due to the lack of oxygen. At the far west of the swamp is Tenda Village.

Trivia

  • The name of Chommo comes from the native name of Mount Everest in Nepal, the highest mountain in the world. Everest is called "Chomolungma" in the Tibetan language, transliterated as "chomoranma (チョモランマ)" in Japanese. Note that the Japanese name for Dalaam is "Ramma (ランマ)". Owing to this etymology, Chommo is the only region in EarthBound that doesn't end in "land".
