Boney is the family dog in Mother 3, accompanying Flint and Lucas on their respective journeys. In Chapter 1, Boney fights alongside Flint and later is sent to go wake up Duster to make an otherwise dead-end cliff scalable. After the three-year jump in Chapter 4, Boney joins Lucas and stays with him throughout the game.

Boney's special skill, Sniff, is similar to Jeff's "spy" command in EarthBound, which reveals an enemy's weaknesses and "type". However, unlike Jeff's spying, it does not reveal enemy stats.
