Talk:List of recovery items in Mother 3

Description

Shouldn't there be sections for the in-game descriptions of the items?--Starman125 20:34, 15 December 2011 (EST)

Same goes for the other items, not just in Mother 3, but in EarthBound and Mother as well.--Starman125 20:39, 15 December 2011 (EST)

Honestly, I don't think so. There's no easy way to make it as readable as the Mother lists without the large pictures next to it to help separate them, and a lot of it can be TL/DR. The way we have the lists now makes it much more readable. ESPECIALLY for the EarthBound lists. It turns into a jumbled mess of paragraphs that a lot of people skip over, and there needs to be a balance between readability and relevance. I think a table honestly works better in this situation, though eventually I plan to go back and add locations that you can get the items to the table, so it basically will say mostly the same thing as the Mother lists, just organized differently. Multus 06:36, 16 December 2011 (EST)

FFFFFFFF--alright, whatever.--Starman125 11:39, 16 December 2011 (EST)
...Wait. What about using a sortable table? The list is supposed to be sortable, right? And if a table works better for using descriptions... well, you get the idea. So how about it?--Starman125 19:05, 16 December 2011 (EST)
You're... entirely missing what I'm saying. We have a sortable table already, and the descriptions would make it a lot harder to read. The way we have it now presents the info outright, as well as being extremely simple to read. Multus 18:11, 17 December 2011 (EST)
Then what the hell did you mean by "I think a table honestly works better in this situation"? :/--Starman125 21:13, 17 December 2011 (EST)

First of all, relax~ EarthBound is a series where we have fun. This wiki should be the same! I just stated my opinion, and that's all. What I mean is, we're already USING a table, silly! We all opted to add the descriptions and stuff at one point in a paragraph format, and it ended up looking like a jumbled, unorganized mess. The reason the key items lists and Mother lists aren't simple tables is because they don't need to be. There's a lot to them. The thing with EarthBound/Mother 3's items is that a paragraph format would make them all look like... oh, what's a good example? Spiky Weapon, maybe? What I mean is it'd look like...

Bag of fries

Bags of fries are restorative items in EarthBound. They restore around 60 HP, but have little effect on Poo. They can be bought in Onett, Twoson, and Fourside.

In-game description

"Bags of fries are delicious and you should totally buy me one, because I'm hungry and this is a joke. But seriously, where's my fries?"
AKA, it would all essentially be one entire PAGE full of what this wiki classifies as stubs, which not only is hard on the eyes, but also less readable. Multus 21:46, 17 December 2011 (EST)

Wait, that's what you thought I was talking about? No, I was talking about something like this:
Name Japanese Amount Healed Notes In-Game Description
item japname restoredhp note description

...Though, admittedly, my wording may have been a bit vague.--Starman125 22:14, 17 December 2011 (EST)

Descriptions like THIS are why that won't work. Multus 22:24, 17 December 2011 (EST)
Name Japanese Amount Healed* Additional effects Where to buy Description
Pasta di Summers サマーズふうパスタ
Summers-styled Pasta
110HP x Summers This is a pasta dish which legend holds was a favorite of King Summers the Third in the 16th century. Back then, there were many great chefs, confident of their culinary skills, always going to and from Summer's Palace. Once day, King Summers wife, Anna Summers, said, "Oh what I wouldn't give for some really delicious pasta!" ... ... ... ...Well, let's just leave it at that. The story is too long to go through completely... but it really is a beautiful, touching tale...
*insert rage-filled response here*--Starman125 23:30, 17 December 2011 (EST)
Okay whoa, calm down there. I do feel like we should have the item descriptions somewhere, but it wouldn't quite work with the barebones table we use right now. If we had a more specialized table for items, we might be able to put in the item descriptions without it looking horribly wonky. (Might be hard to avoid with some of the EB ones since some of them go off on... tangents, like the Pasta di Summers, but it could work.) →Tinā δ 08:11, 18 December 2011 (EST)
Have you ever thought of using "wikitable sortable" instead? If the table you use now is too "barebones", as you said, then why not use "wikitable sortable"?--Starman125 11:36, 18 December 2011 (EST)

I don't think you're understanding why I have a problem with this... The thing is, the overly long descriptions would shrink the other sections of the table; a problem which isn't remedied by wikitable. In EarthBound's case, it gets to the point where it's a complete eyesore, and in some cases, splits the Japanese Kana and translation between four lines, which is COMEPLETELY unacceptable. If I had more time I would have made a fix for it by now, but my template-making skills aren't exactly 100% great; I work with what I got, but it takes a while. This also causes problems when there's an exceedingly short description, and then it gets pushed to the left. The description for Hamburger is just "100% beef". Then it hogs one section of the table. If it's that big of a deal to you, I'll work on it, but chill, dude. Multus 14:19, 18 December 2011 (EST)

My attempt at an item infobox:

I'm sure someone else could do it better, but here's what I came up with. :/ Multus 15:24, 18 December 2011 (EST)

Exactly, Multus-- this is what I mean by a more specialized table. Wikitable sortable would not work and would still look wonky. I kind of like this one you came up with, but I might try tweaking it later to make it a little more compact or something. We'll get to adding descriptions, but it's nothing to get really worked up about. Then again, I guess we could use some things to do, since it's been so inactive recently... →Tinā δ 21:28, 18 December 2011 (EST)
Blergh. This'll do, I guess.--Starman125 01:21, 19 December 2011 (EST)
Have we considred doing something like Bulbapedia's item lists, where certain details remain hidden by default? (example) Miles (talk) 15:24, 19 December 2011 (EST)
Not a big fan of the way Bulbapedia does it, actually. For one thing, it isn't simply look at a section, see how much it recovers. For a game with so many recovery and battle items as EarthBound, it wouldn't be as useful in presenting info as it is with Pokemon which has a few different types of Potions. EarthBound has soooo many food items... EDIT: To clarify, I'm not 100% against the idea, but there are only a few, very select items whose descriptions go... I love how Tina said this, off-base. If we could hide just really long descriptions, I would be completely in favor. EDIT#2: Any way we could implement a scrollbar to the descriptions or something similar? Geez, you wouldn't think such a simple thing as an item description would cause such a problem :/Multus 16:01, 19 December 2011 (EST)
Maybe a "show/hide" switch will work?--Starman125 11:46, 20 December 2011 (EST)
Well, yes it will work, but a scrollbar is preferred; if it can't be pulled off, that's probably what will happen. Multus 17:12, 20 December 2011 (EST)
It may be kind of a pain to implement scrollbars, I think. But it might be possible with the magic of some extensions. I'm not too fond of how Bulbapedia does it with the item lists - the show/hide thing gets kinda clunky, yeah. I think probably the best way to do it is to maybe make the text smaller for longer descriptions (hmm), or the scrollbar idea. I'll try making a mockup later and see how it goes, I guess. →Tinā δ 17:57, 20 December 2011 (EST)

I heard you like scrollbars, so I put a scrollbar in your scrollbar. Multus 18:59, 21 December 2011 (EST)
Yes, this could very much work.--Starman125 11:43, 28 December 2011 (EST)

240 What

Double Jerky says that it costs 240, but doesn't give a unit. 240 DP? Blushock (talk) 23:43, 4 May 2023 (UTC)

Yeh it's supposed to say 240 DP, gonna fix that. --UltimɑteToɑd Toadsig.png 23:06, 6 May 2023 (UTC)
