Wii (Japanese: ウィー Wii) is a seventh-generation video game console released by Nintendo on November 19, 2006. It is the successor to the GameCube (2001), and the predecessor to the Wii U (2012).

Despite no EarthBound games being released on the Wii, the series has received representation in Super Smash Bros. Brawl with characters and stages appearing in the game.

Features

The Wii takes on a unique direction of being designed with a television set theme in mind. The Wii's has a unique unconventional controller designed like a remote control, with software being referred to as channels.

The Wii uses 3D graphics like its predecessor the GameCube, with the graphics noticeably increased since the GameCube. Game data is stored in internal flash memory of 512 MB, of which black variant released later can store even more memory.

Wii Remote

The Wii uses a unique controller which is in the shape of a remote control known as the Wii Remote (referred to as "Wiimote" by fans). The Wiimote is a wireless controller which uses a sensor bar to connect to the Wii, after which it can be used as a pointing device on most games. One of the Wiimote's key features is its motion-control capability. As a first for most controllers, players can perform various movements to allow for greater interactivity with gaming software, with motion controls being expanded upon using the Wii Motion-Plus. Additional attachments can connect to the Wiimote to be used for certain games, such as the Classic Controller for a more traditional controller, and a control-stick attachment known as the Nunchuck. Like previous home consoles, up to four players can play.

Wii Menu

The Wii Menu is considered as the "hub" in which users can select various channels with different functions, as well as downloading additional channels and games through the Wii Shop Channel. The Disc Channel is where players can play Wii games inserted into the system An update allowed for SD Card compatibility (and later compatibility with SDHC Cards) which allows channels to be installed into the cards. Wii games are played on optical discs while also featuring backwards compatibility with the GameCube.

Connectivity

The Wii features internet connection which allows for even greater interactivity. Certain games can connect to Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection to connect to other players around the world. WiiConnect24 was a service which allowed messages to be sent to other devices, although the service was shut down on June 30, 2013, along with a few channels.

The Wii Shop Channel is where players can download additional software channels using Wii Points. A selection of games were released exclusively on the Wii Shop Channel known as WiiWare. Virtual Console made its debut on the Wii, it allows players to download and play games from older systems.

Revisions

Wii Family Edition

The Wii Family Edition is a model released at a lower price with the GameCube compatibility removed. This version was designed to lay horizontally instead of vertically as with the original, however it is able to stand upright. It was released in 2011.

Wii Mini

The Wii Mini is a smaller, cheaper version of the Wii which removes several features. Like the Family Edition, GameCube support has been removed. Additionally, online features and SD Card support were removed, as a result it can only play games from Wii discs. It also only has one USB port rather than the two on the original Wii, and can only use composite video cables rather than the S-Video and component video cables used by the original Wii.

EarthBound and Super Smash Bros. games

  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl: Released in 2008, this game features a variety of EarthBound content in the form of characters and stages.

A demo for Mother 2 is playable in the Japanese version of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, however the game itself was never released on the Wii Shop Channel in any country.
