Names from the Mother Encyclopedia

First (since I don't know much about this encyclopedia), is this encyclopedia an official product? Just double-checking.

Second, what other otherwise-unnamed things have names in it? Miles (talk) 13:45, 3 April 2011 (MDT)

Well, according to the book's back cover, it is © Nintendo and Shigesato Itoi, so I'd say that it is considered as (at least sufficiently) canon. The book is quite cozy and provides with some really obscure tidbits of information, like the characters' length and weight, so I'd actually recommend all of the Mother fans out there to purchase a copy when they get the chance. :3

And there are unfortunately not that many more locations/other stuff with specified names. There are a few ones which have different names when romanized, compared to that of the game (which merely can be made use of as redirects). Some examples are that Lloyd's name is spelled as "Roid" (don't know if that really helps us that much with the name issue) and that "Ana" is spelled as "Anna". I can list some of the more interesting ones if you'd like to.

  • Pippi's Mother = Mrs. Lindgren
  • Cemetery = simply referred to as South Cemetery and Cemetery
  • Crystal Cavern = Magicant Underground (I've been asking about this on the page's talk page, actually)
  • Ruins in Yucca Desert = simply Ruins of Desert
  • Swamp = Swamp Land

And then there's some individual referred to as Goldrich Duncan who supposedly lives near Thanksgiving (I'm thinking Duncan's Factory), who is mentioned in one of the few texts in plain english. Linky.

If you'd like to have a more visually clear understanding of what I've mentioned, I'd be glad to do some scanning. I can however not contribute much more than uploading images from the book, as my knowledge about japanese (which the texts are written in in more than 95% of the time) is severely limited. This Kenisu person has done some pretty cool work with translating the content of the book, however. ~ Sun Braid 13:16, 4 April 2011 (MDT)

Sounds good, Sun Braid. Keep up the good work! Miles (talk) 13:34, 4 April 2011 (MDT)

Japanese names

I am in fact, incredibly overjoyed that someone other than me can translate/add Japanese names. I went through most of the ones you did real quick to double-check translations, and I think you did a good job. Just letting you know that! lol. →Tinā δ 17:38, 29 April 2011 (MDT)

Thank'ee! Though I really can't state that I'm extraordinarily good at it; online dictionaries help me out a lot. The puns for many of the enemies in M3 would surely in several instances take me hours to figure out. But glad to hear of your overjoyness and that I managed to do a decent work. ~ Sun Braid 06:48, 30 April 2011 (MDT)

The Hippie

So, I've subconsciously been checking the accuracy of some of the page names, with this being yet another. I do now suggest that the Hippie page should be changed to The Hippie, as it is one of two enemies to have the "The" article in its in-battle name, which I've interpreted as it being a part of its actual name (just compare for yourself). I've got the text dump to back me up as well (uhr, all the enemy names are neatly lined up early in the pile of text).

And the reason why I am taking this on my talk page is because the Hippie's talk page wouldn't let itself to be created. Something about it matching a blacklist entry. ~ Sun Braid 10:44, 11 May 2011 (MDT)

If it were me, I'd just have The Hippie redirect to Hippie, might save some trouble. You're right though it should be The Hippie, just seems kind of awkward to have it as a page name.

Multus 10:51, 11 May 2011 (MDT)

Going with in-battle names for consistency. Kind of weird that 'hippie' was blacklisted, though, I'll look into that. (You'd think an EB wiki would be A-OK with hippies.) →Tinā δ 11:08, 11 May 2011 (MDT)

Label-less M1/EB0 maps

Worst case, they can be cropped from here (warning: giant image). Miles (talk) 15:10, 11 May 2011 (MDT)

Oh, yes. That is what I mainly used when making the Mother Encyclopedia-based locations (which I'm far from being done with). The image severely dies when using IE or Chrome though, although installing Firefox isn't really that much of an ordeal. But it'd honestly turn out better if I'd let someone else do that, as I currently can't handle anything more complex than Paint or Picasa (will try to learn all the billions of functions GIMP has to offer sometime though). ~ Sun Braid 15:29, 11 May 2011 (MDT)

Reference images

I'd rather that images being cited be on a webpage somewhere or on the wiki itself, rather than just Photobucket. If you want to upload your Mother Encyclopedia images to WikiBound and tag them with Template:Reference image, that would work. Miles (talk) 16:43, 13 May 2011 (MDT)

Hey when you get a chance, can you check out something i have been working on in my sandbox. Thank you, Tacopill 09:16, 22 May 2011 (MDT),

M1 sprite file nomenclature

Is there some reason that moving all of those is at all urgent? It's not exactly in anyone's way at the moment. Miles (talk) 08:52, 29 May 2011 (MDT)

No, nothing urgent about that, really. It's just that their differing name-related qualities, when compared to the rest of the sprites, can get a little annoying when you for example would like add them to an enemy list of some sort. I think it'd just be overall more practical if all of their names would be arranged systematically in some way, and that it'd be more convenient to get rid off this trifle-ish issue as quick as possible (but, as you said, it doesn't really interfere with anything in any disadvantaging way, so I wouldn't classify it as prioritization number one). I mean, it doesn't really worsen anything (though my knowledge about the process of moving files equals nonexistent, so if it'd affect the pages the sprites are currently used on, it'd perhaps not be worth it). And what's being gained of it (if I was being vague 'bout that) is: consistency. *Does yellow spongy guy's imagination gesticulation* Sun Braid 10:02, 29 May 2011 (MDT)
Moving a file creates a redirect that does still allow the file to be used, but it's better if pages link directly to the correct filename. This would require editing every page that uses every one of those images. Miles (talk) 10:37, 29 May 2011 (MDT)
I don't mind having a couple of minutes killed for the sake of that. So I'm totally up for it. Lolz. Sun Braid 12:56, 29 May 2011 (MDT)
For all of your hard work in making new pages, expanding them, uploading images, and translations, you've definitely earned the Barnstarman award! Keep up the good work! :D →Tinā δ 20:22, 4 July 2011 (EDT)

Itoh's finest

Thought you might be interested. Miles (talk) 18:26, 18 August 2011 (EDT)

Hah, I've actually been following this as of late. Totally awesome that the Mother mangas finally are being paid attention to! This would ease the process of expanding the articles concerning EB manga greatly as well; the "Ness's Adventure Chronicles" being an example of an article I thought would remain as a stub for another decade or so. Sun Braid 19:12, 18 August 2011 (EDT)

Thanks

Thanks for working on Jackie (Earthbound). I couldn't find a Jackie Sprite.

You're alive

Huzzah Miles (talk) 17:51, 6 May 2012 (EDT)

Hah. Thanks for the cheer. I'll hopefully stick around a bit longer this time, seeing as I really ain't too preoccupied with schoolwork, at least not for the time being. Sun Braid (talk) 18:22, 6 May 2012 (EDT)
Yay, we won't look as dead now! I should be more active in the summer, but right now it's finals... hopefully we can get some work done soon! Multus (talk) 06:39, 7 May 2012 (EDT)
Don't expect anything too radical from me though. I randomly rediscovered this site after a relatively long, Mother-free period of time, so the spark isn't quite as strong as it was back then. And even though my schedule isn't cluttered with activities 24/7, I do in addition to school have a life outside of the internet, almost. I'll contribute with as much as my motivation allows me to. Which I hope will be sufficient to keep us somewhat more alive. Sun Braid (talk) 09:30, 7 May 2012 (EDT)

You're alive!

I feel like we've done this before... BB Gang Zombie (talk) 17:59, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

Somewhat alive, I suppose. Can't really promise anything though, I'm afraid. Mainly just spontaneously stopping by to see what's up. But, um, hopefully, we'll be seeing an at least moderate influx of new users once the VC release has occurred, so that things on this wiki might take off like it once did (extremely wishful thinking, no?)
