Hi! This is Wraith, a bureaucrat over at [http://www.pikminfanon.com Pikmin Fanon]. We have a project in the works to create a Nintendo Fanon Network that will initially have a Nintendo Fanon wiki where Earthbound will have a section. We will have coverage of Earthbound Fanon as well as romhacks. So, a coverage expansion may not be necessary. We are still in the planning and outreach phase, but perhaps some users here would be interested in helping out! We have [https://discord.gg/2eV52Dzp4k a Discord Server] for the purposes of planning and gaining support. If you think you would be interested, you can always join the server. But once the wiki is operational, I will provide an update with a link to it, so that users here can post romhack documentation! Revision as of 17:20, 22 July 2021

This is the central talk page of WikiBound. Leave any questions or comments about the wiki in a new section below this message.

just so you know.

Often, there's an independent page for general-wiki-talk. This page is usually about the main page itself. It's OK with me, we just need to be prepared to explain the difference; just in case.WikiSysop 16:26, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

Two things!

The first is about enemies. Right now we have everything having separate pages, though personally I think we could probably merge some of them... namely similar enemy families, like the Ramblin' Shrooms, Mooks, Smilin' Spheres and everyone else who just has the same sprite with recolored palettes/boosted stats and stuff. There's not really much to say about them, other than some sort of infobox with stats and PSI weaknesses/resistances..

The second iiiis! Would anyone mind if I were to create some infoboxes and templates and stuff? :D I was mostly thinking of character/location infoboxes, or maybe an enemy one too. I just wanted to ask first so people wouldn't be like "WHAT'S THIS CRAZY WOMAN DOING???". XD; Tina 00:10, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

I really do think the enemy articles could be merged. I just created them right now because New Age Retro Hippie was there. Infoboxes I wouldn't mind. Probably because I don't have any authority. I don't think many would mind though, because this wiki really is just two people regularly editing right now, that being me and the Admin Tacopill. A 00:24, 6 September 2010 (UTC)
No one would mind....being there are only 3 editors, and they are all right here. Any, i like the template designs. Are they original, or imported? O, and please don't forget to add a /doc page. Tacopill 15:36, 6 September 2010 (UTC).
Template:EarthBound characters and Template:Mother 3 characters look exactly the same. So, i was wondering if there should be a core template that is filled in with the usage templates individual data? 04:37, 11 September 2010 (UTC).
Actually, that's not a bad idea... plus it'd make modifying designs between navigation templates a lot easier (the current colors are kind of a placeholder of sorts, unless everyone ends up being okay with them after expanding a little.). :O Tina 04:59, 11 September 2010 (UTC)
Ok, i created this and redid this. What do you think? Tacopill 23:29, 11 September 2010 (UTC).
Looks good! I'll go ahead and change the other navigation templates to use the core, then. Tina 00:04, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
Sounds good. Happy to help. Tacopill 00:08, 12 September 2010 (UTC).
Here's a question though. There are a few exceptions to the enemies being recolors, such as Claymen having a more powerful Forlorn Junk Heap variation. This being, it's similar in style, and it's technically the same species, but it's nonetheless different. Would this mean we would merge it with the Clayman article as a sub-category of Claymen, or just keep it different? My same question goes for any other "more powerful, similar, not the same" enemies. Worthless Protoplasm 11:35, 19 November 2010 (MST)
This conversation is largely out of date, all enemies have their own articles now. So the Clayman and the Forlorn Junk Heap would have separate articles. →Tinā δ 12:57, 19 November 2010 (MST)

To help with the new admins

To help you new admins, i've set up Help:Contents with my recommended pages. Please take time to help fill them out, as i believe this will help you guys be admins now and in the future. Please note: In doing so, i do ask you do not copy from other wikis. You are free to look to wikipedia and the other NIWA wiki's for ideas, suggestions and inspirations, but don't blindly copy and page from them. Adapt the information to our wiki, and source places you went to for help. Here is a tool you can use in this goal. Good luck, Tacopill 11:26, 17 September 2010 (MDT).

Positions in the Wiki

Warning! Spoiler warning: this article or section may contain major plot or ending details! Proceed with caution.

Due to me leaving to see some friends tomorrow, i thought it would be a good time to reveal this:

User New Position
Tacopill
  • Owner:
    • Policy Approver, organizer of stuff.
Tina
  • Editor-in-Chief:
    • Responsible for main game content
A
  • Deputy Editor-in-Chief #1:Side Content
    • Resposible for Side Game Content
  • Organizer of Wiki Projects,
  • Designer of User Awards,
  • and related wiki stuff.
Metroid King
  • Deputy Editor-in-Chief #2:Linguistic Studies:
    • responsible for keeping the content of the pages up to Quality Standards of the wiki in terms of spelling and grammar.
    • provide consolation to the other administrators.

In terms of Chain-of-Command, it's this:

Chain of Command
Regularly
  1. Tacopill
  2. Tina & A
  3. Metroid King
In the Event the Owner is Absent for a prolonged period of time
  1. Tina
  2. A & Metroid King

This way the person in charge of the wiki always has someone to step in in their absence, and that person always has two people to help them out.

Please Note: Over time, the current positions will become more specific, as new positions are created and responsibilities delegated. If you have any suggestions on how i can improve upon this, then please tell me.

and i hope you like this, everyone. Tacopill 14:37, 28 September 2010 (MDT).

Thank you very much for the Editor-in-Chief position! Have fun on your trip, too.
I promise to have at least some policies and help pages written up while you're gone. Really! 8( →Tinā δ 16:19, 28 September 2010 (MDT)
No problem, and thank you.
This sounds good. Talk to Metroid King for help elaborating and expanding the policy pages.
Also, while editing, i recommend you check out restricted-pages like Special:ReplaceText. Tacopill 16:38, 28 September 2010 (MDT).

domain

So......what do you guys think would be domain. WikiBound.info is available, and so is .net, .org, .biz and .us. What do you guys think? Tacopill 10:25, 5 October 2010 (MDT).

I like wikibound.info, personally, since it'd get results for "EarthBound info" and the like (I think?). Although I've been always fond of .org URLs for some reason, too. :P →Tinā δ 10:44, 5 October 2010 (MDT)
I don't think URLs change search results. Regardless I think it should have .info, .net, or .org, as .biz is more for for-profit sites, and .us wouldn't really fit with the wiki aspect; anyone in the world, regardless the country, can edit wikis. Personally, I'm for the .net suffix. A 14:08, 5 October 2010 (MDT)
Hmmm... .net is good, too. And I meant that search engines would see the 'info' in the site's URL, so if someone were to search "EarthBound info" or something like that, it would be more likely to pop up...? I'm not sure. I just remember hearing the logic somewhere. →Tinā δ 14:51, 5 October 2010 (MDT)

Galleries

TW, an admin at LW, has started to making Gallery pages on the various characters, games, etc. Do you guys think doing this on WB would be helpful for us? Tacopill 13:20, 13 October 2010 (MDT).

Potentially, I guess. The Mother series doesn't get much artwork, though, outside of like... clay figures for the main characters, and SSB. But I would imagine that most artwork could easily fit on a gallery on their own page.
Unless game screenshots would count, too, since I know Mother 3 (not so much the other two, though) has a ton of sprites for everything. Or having a picture of every collectible photo from EB! And so on. →Tinā δ 14:12, 13 October 2010 (MDT)
Sounds good. If you do decide to go for it, how would you think it should be named? here are some option i can think of for a Ness Page:
  1. Gallery:Ness - create a new namespace (like Mario Wiki, Zelda Wiki and Metroid Wiki)?
  2. Ness/Gallery - create a subpage (like [stw:Sonic_the_Hedgehog_(character)/Gallery|Sonic the Wiki])
  3. Gallery of Art focusing on Ness - no other wiki has this!
Tacopill 14:55, 13 October 2010 (MDT).
I like Ness/Gallery the most, personally. I don't think it would be worth it to make an entirely new namespace that would be used for probably like... three characters. :P Short and to the point, too. →Tinā δ 15:01, 13 October 2010 (MDT)
Sounds good. Feel free to implement it if and when you choose. Tacopill 15:05, 13 October 2010 (MDT).

Discussion Center

This wiki could use a discussion center (similar to the one here for users to talk about basic things around the wiki. I'm proposing something along the lines of Community Center, but does anyone have any opinions as to what its name should be if it is made? Metroid King Ω 14:56, 7 November 2010 (MST)

I like 'Community Center', personally. Either that, or we could go with a fun EB-related name (something preferably known as a social area... Club Titiboo? haha). A discussion center would be a very good idea, though, and would make things a tad more organized with more general wiki topics.
I would avoid using the word 'forum', however, just because it makes it sound more like it's a general forum for EB stuff as opposed to wiki topics. →Tinā δ 15:01, 7 November 2010 (MST)

Extensions

Uhm, just a small request to whoever is handling the technical on this wiki. Could you update the SidebarDonateBox, Wiki Category Tag Cloud, and WikiVid extensions. Those e-mails and urls showing up in Special:Version are dead, I'd like to avoid them floating around. Also Wiki Category Tag Cloud has actually been moved to the wikimedia svn the more up to date version is there. Also WikiVid was never finished, I wouldn't recommend installing it, iirc I never even implemented the ability to delete things. Dantman 21:21, 7 November 2010 (MST)

Are you speaking of the Grifkuba Wiki as the link from the sidebar donation as the one being out of date? Because i plan on getting back to it, one day. Also, i find it cool that the designer of a wiki extension has come to our wiki (you did say I never even implemented the ability to delete things, which means, you were going to implement it. *laughs*) But seriously, this is my understanding of your suggestions:
  • Update: SidebarDonateBox, Wiki Category Tag Cloud,
  • Remove: WikiVid
Am i correct? Tacopill 21:34, 7 November 2010 (MST).
Heh, of course I was going to implement the ability to delete things, just never got to it... WikiVid is a dead project, it's one of the plethora of projects I started, never finished, and probably will never pick up again (I like to experiment, but generally don't finish big things I start myself unless there's something strong backing them). -- Actually, I did some stuff in core as well... you know how after you rollback you see a diff of what you just rolled back? that's one of the things I added. Refactored EditPage and made $wgSharedTables too. -- But ya, though more like:
  • Update: SidebarDonateBox
  • Update to Wikimedia version: WikiCategoryTagCloud
  • Remove: WikiVid
I like playing with advanced things and dislike seeing substandard MediaWiki installs that could be improved so I was just scanning the niwa wikis and thinking of starting up a thread in the forum giving some tips on things that could be fixed, just posted here cause I noticed dead e-mails on some of my extensions (I don't use telus anymore). Dantman 21:45, 7 November 2010 (MST)
Wait, so you are the actual author of said extensions? .... that's so cool! Anyway, i am taking care of the File's now. I hope you stick around. Tacopill 21:55, 7 November 2010 (MST).
I'm actually not much of a gaming wiki's person, I usually focus on animanga related wiki. Dantman 22:29, 7 November 2010 (MST)
It's fine. Are you an admin any wiki's in the animanga area? Tacopill 22:33, 7 November 2010 (MST).
Founded the Animepedia which died and became the Animanga Wiki, the Narutopedia, and the Soul Eater Wiki. Also tried founding a few other dead wiki like Mar and O-Parts Hunter. Plenty of "sysop" flags lying around on various animanga related wiki. Dantman 22:36, 7 November 2010 (MST)
Cool. Do you know if any of them are seeking independence? Tacopill 22:42, 7 November 2010 (MST).
Narutopedia's survey of the wider community didn't end up favorable right now. Soul Eater has lost it's activity lately. Animanga is, well... moving somewhere else might not work out, it's really a hub. Oh right, I brought up the Dragonball Wiki as well before nonoitall take over. They're having talks with FUNimation. Dantman 22:46, 7 November 2010 (MST)
Ah, OK. If any of them do choose independence, please give me a holler. I'd like to get involved in the conversation, and possibly offer them a hosting option in the future. Tacopill 22:49, 7 November 2010 (MST).
heh, the ones thinking of moving are extremely high traffic, shared hosting won't cut it in any way. I'd probably be directly involved in whatever hosting they end up with. Dantman 22:53, 7 November 2010 (MST)

What Other hosting options are there? I hear rackspacing, is 22 cents a gig of transfer data. The reason i am asking is, i am looking for a cheaper alternative to Bluehost, and i was hoping you may have a suggestion. Tacopill 23:09, 7 November 2010 (MST).

Switching to rackspacecloud you have to change your thinking, it's not about the price but the type of hosting. Shared hosting and vps/dedicated/cloud are fundamentally different things. I'm one for cloud hosting myself, I'm using rackspacecloud right now and we're using at work too, picked it out from other cloud hosts because the base prices for the smallest instances are the cheapest (most of what we're doing is in development, not production yet so dev leans in favor of cheaper prices). Though I've been looking into other hosts for production (the proportional ram/disk lock on rackspace isn't quite what you want on real cloud hosting), iirc Elastic Hosts looked like it had interesting potential. Dantman 23:25, 7 November 2010 (MST)
Cool, and Thank you for getting back to me on this. I definitely have more information on what to look for. Tacopill 23:33, 7 November 2010 (MST).

Interwiki Standards

NIWA recently did a staff release agreeing to have the interwiki links across all wiki's be the same to make it easier for those who help out multiple wiki's as well as the new users on each prospective wiki.

Here is the table as it is now:

Code Url
acwiki http://animalcrossingwiki.me/wiki/
bulbapedia http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/$1
lylatwiki http://starfoxwiki.org/$1
mariowiki http://www.mariowiki.com/$1
metroidwiki http://metroidwiki.org/index.php/$1
pikipedia http://www.pikminwiki.com/$1
smashwiki http://www.ssbwiki.com/$1
strategywiki http://strategywiki.org/wiki/$1
warswiki http://warswiki.warscentral.com/index.php?title=$1
wikibound http://grifkuba.org/MotherEarthBoundWiki/index.php?title=$1
wikirby http://wikirby.info/wiki/$1
zeldawiki http://zeldawiki.org/$1

In addition to using these links, we are free to use additional prefixes like Bulba: and BP: and Bulbapedia: for bulbapedia. Which means we have the following choice to make:

  1. We change all interwiki links to the standard and only use the standard from that point on.
  2. We use acronyms in addition to the standard and then the editor chooses which code to use.

There are pro's and con's to each one, so before implementing it, i am giving you guys a chance to discuss which way we should go (unless i am overridden :D ). See [1] for Lylat Wiki's discussion. Tacopill 11:09, 9 November 2010 (MST).

I would just use the standard and then stick with that, it's a lot less confusing and it's more to the point as to what it leads to. It'd stay the same with link templates, as well (so instead of typing, say... I dunno, [[smashwiki:Lucas|Lucas]] it would be {{smashwiki|Lucas}}?) There's also no trying to wrestle with sites that share similar acronyms or trying to abbreviate it and have it still make sense. A tad longer, but it doesn't hurt very much to type an extra couple letters. →Tinā δ 11:48, 9 November 2010 (MST)
sounds good. Do we want to go with interwiki templates, like BP and ZW has (minus the icons ZW putting in)? Tacopill 09:59, 18 November 2010 (MST).
That's what I meant by link templates. :P Interwiki/link templates are very handy to have, so I'd implement them personally. →Tinā δ 10:18, 18 November 2010 (MST)
Yea, i figured that's what you meant. Just wanted to make sure.
Anyway, i will insert the information in the the database. And then run text replaces on the pages to change them over. Tacopill 10:28, 18 November 2010 (MST). Tacopill 10:28, 18 November 2010 (MST).

We are moving

Sorry for the short notice, but....we are moving! Our new address will be wikibound.info. If you need to know why this is happening, please ask me after we move. Tacopill 15:11, 4 December 2010 (MST).

Coupla little things

  1. It's generally "Super Smash Bros." and not "Super Smash Brothers" in the same way nobody would say "Super Mario Brothers"... (I'd change it myself, but the Main Page is appropriately locked.)
  2. Toto exists, so you might want to take it off the "wanted articles" thing.
  3. For the Help namespace, you may want to check out the SmashWiki help section, which I overhauled upon joining NIWA. If you'd like to adapt the content therein or would like me to, feel free to do so or ask. Miles of SmashWiki 12:50, 28 December 2010 (MST)
Took care of the first two. It would be nice if we could adapt the content and overhaul the help system we have here, though. I do like SmashWiki's help pages a lot, they look very helpful and simple for new users to grasp. →Tinā δ 14:08, 28 December 2010 (MST)

I noticed on Special:Upload, I can't upload images by URL as I can on SmashWiki. I compared both sites' extension lists and can't figure out why. This is a big timesaver that I would think a wiki that's short on images (as WikiBound seems to be) would want. Any ideas how to get it? Miles (talk) 17:05, 29 December 2010 (MST)

It's an option in LocalSettings.php, I believe. I can't change that myself, however. Gotta ask tacopill since he's the server guy.... →Tinā δ 17:17, 29 December 2010 (MST)
It is an option, but is disabled to start off with. Tacopill 20:18, 29 December 2010 (MST).

Background of the mainpage template thing.

Right now, the background of the template (In between trivia, featured picks, ect.) is a plain white. It kinda makes it look weird. If it matched the orange border, it would look a bit better. /aestheticsgeek Shayminguy7 10:32, 12 January 2011 (MST)

I've been meaning to tweaking the Main Page's colors a little more, since it's sorta mis-matched with the rest of the site right now. A colored background for the template would probably look better, I agree. I'll keep that in mind! :D →Tinā δ 17:13, 13 January 2011 (MST)

Good news everyone!

Good news everyone!

  1. I am currently looking into the possibility of getting hosting for not only WikiBound, but for other wiki's that i know are looking for hosting and someone with server-side experience.
  2. In addition, after the hosting and everything is set up, i was considering taking on an apprentice of sorts, to help out on the server-side, with the eventual goal of possibly succeeding me as the site's technician.

What do you guys think? Tacopill 22:19, 8 April 2011 (MDT).

So, no one is interested... :(. Tacopill 14:06, 7 May 2011 (MDT).

StrategyWiki Partnership

So, I have started discussions with StrategyWiki about a possible partnership which would allow this wiki to use their logo, link to them more formally and for them to link back to us. But, how do we want to go about it? Tacopill 12:00, 7 May 2011 (MDT).

I'm not quite sure how a topic from 5 months ago that lasted two posts is starting a discussion, but it could be easily revived, I guess. lol
I'm frankly still a little nervous about the idea, however- we're still very bare on game mechanics and it'd only lead to frustration for people reading SW and going here for 'more detailed info', only to not find it here. While it could potentially lead to editors filling in that information, for the casual reader, it's just plain irritating. →Tinā δ 19:31, 7 May 2011 (MDT)
Yea, i have told them via skype that i am still interested and did so multiple times over the last couple of months. Which is pretty much why i started posting here: if i can spark some kind of interest on our end. :). Tacopill 12:08, 8 May 2011 (MDT).

WikiBound going down this weekend

Hey guys, i have plans on moving the wiki sometime during the weekend to a new server (unless something comes up that prevents me from doing so). So, please do what you want or need to on Friday, expecting that Saturday for it to be down. Sorry if this is short notice and for the inconvenience. Tacopill 13:59, 2 June 2011 (MDT).

Just so you guys are aware.... we haven't moved yet. I am awaiting the database from Yusei, our current webmaster......Other than that, the new server space is set up and all. :). Tacopill 12:57, 7 June 2011 (MDT).

recent server issues

As you may have been seen, we have had recently been dealing with new server issues due to recent websites that have transferred on to it. Rest assured that I am looking into the cause and will have it fixed as soon as possible. Tacopill 08:14, 8 November 2011 (EST).

A little trivia thing...

If it's not obvious, I'm new to this Wiki, and... I happened to notice that the hot spring music (The Water's Great) and Salsa's dance music (Laugh! Be Happy!) are remixes of each other, to an extent... Could someone consider putting that into Template:Main Page/Trivia? Thanks.

SNessie 05:43, 13 December 2011 (EST)

Actually, a lot of Mother 3's music is a remix of one-another if you listen close, so Imho I don't think that's main page worthy. (For an example: Monkey's Love Song and Ragtime Osohe.) Multus 17:45, 13 December 2011 (EST)

huge amount of user creations

Since noticing this, there were a spam of accounts on the recent changes. Can anybody take care of that? ..... (talk) 12:22, 8 June 2012 (EDT)

We're aware! It's being difficult to deal with, and we kinda have to deal with the spam of accounts for a while until we can upgrade our account creation spam filter or something. But it's better than them making new pages all over the place, I guess. →Tinā δ 14:07, 8 June 2012 (EDT)

Mother/EarthBound Zero 23rd anniversary

If someone has time, try putting this up on the news. ..... (talk) 11:22, 27 July 2012 (EDT)

Oh holy dang, I completely forgot to update this. :( quietly goes to update the news and hopes that no one noticed how late this was.Tinā δ 18:04, 29 July 2012 (EDT)

MRS SATurn vandalism

The entire Ness page has been replaced with two or three sentences. I don't have any powr to rollback or anything like that. Someone please get on that if possible Gpev96 (SHAZAM!) 13:06, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

I've been undoing individual article changes myself Gpev96 (SHAZAM!) 13:29, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

IN all of the pages that that she has vandalized, she has recommended deleted, please don't

Blocked them, apologies for not getting to that sooner. I'd recommend leaving a message on my talk page if there's a problem for the future, I think I might be the person who checks the wiki the most these days, so getting a big orange notice to bring my attention would be a good idea. ~platinatina (talkcontribs) 16:12, 4 October 2014 (UTC)
Alright thanks. I just recently joined this wiki, so I'm not familiar with all of the admins on the site. I informed Miles, because I knew him from Smash Wiki Gpev96 (SHAZAM!) 13:38, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

Advertisements

In order to support the upkeep of the server, we're asking the sites we're hosting if they would be willing to host advertisements. We're looking to have two to three ads on each site - one at the top and bottom of the content area, and possibly one in the sidebar, but this can be negotiated. All money raised will go towards the cost of the server/hosting and domain names. This won't affect the day-to-day running of the site in any way. Please discuss this, and let me know if you're okay with ads being placed on the site. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask me. Thank you, Moydow (talk) 21:02, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

Mother 4

Should there be any coverage of well-made fangames (at least ones that aren't romhacks, e.g. Mother 4 or Cognitive Dissonance)? I mean, the series is most likely never going to continue, leaving us with a grand total of three games to talk about, leaving the wiki to just sort of die. Niiue (talk) 03:08, 28 May 2015 (UTC)

Earthbound Beginnings Release

Mother has been released in North America and Europe as Earthbound Beginnings for a total of two weeks now; as it's a huge event for the Earthbound/Mother community, it's pretty important that it gets covered in the news on the home page. Also, Lucas came back to Smash Bros. on the same day. Thanks. -Peanutcheesebar (talk) 22:55, 28 June 2015 (UTC)

A sad note

I released this but the wiki is dead but i can't create pages so i can help but i relly wount too so can someone pleasegive me the ability to create pages. Please and thank you. -Motherfan101 (talk) 20:05, 27 November 2016 (UTC)

EarthBound series 30th anniversary

Today is the 30th anniversary of the EarthBound series since the release of Mother in Japan. Should this be included in the wiki news? SupaToad64 Toad.jpg 01:34, 27 July 2019 (UTC)

I apologize for my late response on this. I like the idea. Tacopill (talk) 18:28, 27 July 2019 (UTC)

proposal

I'm proposing this Wiki-tan to be the site mascot. It's similar to Wikipe-tan, but more in an earthbound-style. Created by PreacherJr of the Earthbound Amino. Tacopill (talk) 14:46, 5 April 2020 (UTC)

lol uh... the artwork is nice but I'm not entirely sure if this is suited for this wiki. After all we usually don't see fanart on wikis in general. I do think a mascot would be good for this wiki, but my first choice would be an actual EarthBound series character , my personal picks would be probably Ness or Mr Saturn (I have thought of Starman before, but Starmen.net has kinda already taken that). Omegα Toαd 64 Toad.jpg 22:42, 5 April 2020 (UTC)
Don't mean to double post but I felt I should be more specific: My concern with this one is that it looks more like a generic anime character rather than something to represent EarthBound. (As a disclaimer I have nothing against anime and people who like it and I find weebs to be at least somewhat tolerable unlike furries) While this character does wear Paula's dress she doesn't fit well in an encyclopedia dedicated to EarthBound, if this was an EarthBound fansite yes she would work, but this is a public encyclopedia so it's something different.
The reason I suggested Ness and Saturn is since they are both among the most iconic and recognized characters in the EarthBound series, after all the italian WikiBound has Ness on the logo. As a result they would fot well for the community driven EarthBound/Mother encyclopedia (btw how come the slogan doesn't appear on pages or on Google search? Like how SmashWiki says "From SmashWiki, the Super Smash Bros. Wiki") Anyway while I do like the artwork I feel it's out of place for this wiki . Omegα Toαd 64 Toad.jpg 23:15, 5 April 2020 (UTC)
Nothing about this character to me says "EarthBound", aside from the logo sticker on her bag, which I almost missed. Alex95 (talk) 17:23, 6 April 2020 (UTC)
I think the style of the wiki-tan given is not suited for this wiki. StarFoxNook (talk) 01:38, 7 April 2020 (UTC)

I don't believe that a Wikipe-tan clone is appropriate as a mascot for this website. PikaSamus (talk) 18:55, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

File Policy

I'm not seeing it in our policies at the moment, but it is usually a good idea to source where files are coming from during or after an upload happened. Should we make this into an actual policy? Tacopill (talk) 03:09, 15 July 2020 (UTC)

I think that would be a good idea, just to cover ourselves for legal reasons and to check resources. I can write something up for this GeneticistVarik (talk)
On Help:Uploading media we actually do have it written:
"Be sure to include where you got the file from, what it depicts, etc."
It is a bit unclear though so I believe it would be good to clarify how (e.g. a link to the source or at least a mention of where it was from). Omegα Toαd 64 Toad.jpg 03:29, 15 July 2020 (UTC)
Yea, I read that over, and I'm agreeing. Some of the recent file uploads don't say if they are game rips, downloaded from another site or something else. Not pointing fingers, just bringing it up so people don't have to backtrack in future uploads.
If you did upload a file and didn't give a clear source, please make sure to head back and add it.
Thank you, Tacopill (talk) 03:39, 15 July 2020 (UTC)
Yeah that would probably be me lol. Though yes I fully agree sourcing them is a good idea. To clarify though the recent surplus of uploads from me are from official Japanese strategy guides for Mother 1 and 2, which contain illustrations of the items that I scan and crop myself. Omegα Toαd 64 Toad.jpg 04:02, 15 July 2020 (UTC)
Cool, and thank you for clarifying. This does raise more questions.
  1. Do you know if the book has an ISBN? If so, we could probably link to them via Special:BookSources.
  2. Should we create articles about the strategy guides? If so, we could link to them on the file pages.
Tacopill (talk) 11:48, 15 July 2020 (UTC)
I can't find the ISBN, plus I don't really know the deep details about the books aside from the basics (I can't read Japanese and I just lookup the names on here to match them with their English names). Both games actually had several different guides released, however the ones I'm using are more official and in line with books like Encyclopedia Mother.
For EarthBound Beginnings the illustrations of the items come specifically from here, it also contains maps and character stats. It was one of the 2 books that hosted the challenge where you send a seal to the publisher to win a Franklin Badge (the other being Encyclopedia Mother). I do actually like the illustrations in this book, and funny enough some items actually look like how they're named in the English release (such as the aluminum bat and the rings/bracelets, which Encyclopedia Mother's depictions look nothing like the English names. Also poor plastic bat). What I'm doing is using the illustrations for when we list the items in the templates, while still using Encyclopedia Mother's primarily if possible.
I don't actually own the EarthBound one, but from what it seems like is it's basically the Mother 2 counterpart to the Mother 1 guide. A little while ago I was able to find a collection of the item pages on Starmen.net's Mother 1+2 item guide, which contain all of the other items besides the weapons have the English names right next to the items[2] (which makes it more convenient and a lot easier to translate the names so it's a plus for me). I don't have the M2 player's guide, and from what it seems both that and the EarthBound player's guide don't have pictures of every item in the game, so eventually I plan to use this and upload the illustrations of all of the items in the game. Whichever book these came from is the one I'm using, I'll try to find out more about it. If I (or others too) find out more about the books, I for one would like to have articles about the various strategy guides released, though for now I probably might only be able to do the one I'm using for EBB.
Also I believe it would be a good idea to mention which images are acceptable for the mainspace. Generally as long as they come from official sources (official artwork, Player's guides and strategy guides, etc) they should be fine. Fan made art should only be limited to userpages and never used in the mainspace. Omegα Toαd 64 Toad.jpg 14:06, 15 July 2020 (UTC)

Artwork removal request

I would like my old art taken down from the main css. Not sure who to talk to for this anymore, and I believe it requires some level of backend access, if I'm remembering correctly. But I would like it taken down, considering I drew it a decade ago, and having to face it every time I want to double-check minor trivia has been haunting me. It also feels kind of tacky and unprofessional to me, but that is just my two cents. Thank you. Tina (talk) 19:58, 18 July 2020 (UTC)

All set. A new skin has actually on been on my mind for a while now, been just busy with other stuff. Let me know if you have any suggestions. Tacopill (talk) 23:02, 18 July 2020 (UTC)
I don't have an actual picture to use, but I would suggest something to match with the blue background. I'll be thinking of one that will work. I thought maybe we could have the clay models of some characters, eg the EarthBound protags like Ness and Ninten (unfortunately Lucas doesn't have an official clay model, and it'd be a bad idea to use fanmade ones without permission).
I also have thought of in the past other additions to this skin, such as adding colors to the admins' usernames in the recent changes and page histories, something like this: Admin's username. I have seen this done on other wikis, just I don't know how to do so besides the text color. Omegα Toαd 64 Toad.jpg 00:24, 19 July 2020 (UTC)
That font color and style is pretty hard to read... Alex95 (talk) 00:51, 19 July 2020 (UTC)
(Username) How about this instead? totally not a give us mother3 reference Omegα Toαd 64 Toad.jpg 01:17, 19 July 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, that's better, though gold doesn't really mesh well on white, tbh. Alex95 (talk) 01:19, 19 July 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for taking it down! Minor design advice: Yellow text is difficult to read on white pages. Just go with green or a blue, one that's distinct enough from the default link color. If you have to squint to read it, it's not good. Don't do that. Tina (talk) 06:11, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

Coverage Expansion

Hey all!

I was wondering if we wanted to expand coverage to include fan-games, games-inspired by Mother/Earthbound, and more.

Could help bring in new people.

If not on this wiki, I could make a fanon wiki, similar to Pikmin Fanon.

Let me know what you think, Tacopill (talk) 21:40, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

I don't really enjoy covering fan games, as that would lead to many, many, many new material that may not be appropriate for our coverage. Where would the limit be, should we cover all fan games that get made regardless of the content? Or do we just cover the games that are made by members of our community (the first question would probably still apply here)? I don't entirely know how Pikmin Fanon is run, and I know Mother is a small franchise with not a lot of unofficial creations, but that's a no from me unless I see some solid guidelines about how we are going about this. Alex95 (talk) 21:55, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
Mother Forever did their own Direct on this, covering 23 games. I was imagining we could do one-page-per-project, since some of the projects are just Fan Translations, while others are new full games unto themselves.
I'm also agreeing there would need to be guidelines before this started, even if we were to go with a Mother Fanon route. Tacopill (talk) 22:02, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
I'm all for covering fan games on here since this is a small franchise, and covering fan games can help expand this wiki and bring in more editors.
However as Alex said, we should have guidelines and a limit to what should be covered. If you ask me, I feel it should be clearly recognizable as an EarthBound game or inspired by it. Second I would consider notability and how well known it is within the community, much like how SmashWiki handles hacks like Project M. If it's a small game that isn't as well known it should go into EarthBound hacks and fangames while big and popular ones can have their own pages.
I'm not sure how Pikmin fanon works but I'm willing to have it done in any way possible. OmegαToαd64 Toadsig.png 23:20, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
I think a new wiki would be a good idea. The alternative would be to have a namespace in this wiki, but that would get things too messy, too quickly. A fanon wiki helps bring a lot of activity to an otherwise dying franchise, and as Tacopill said, there is actually a scary high number of fan games and fan content being made. Espyo (talk) 23:11, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi! This is Wraith, a bureaucrat over at Pikmin Fanon. We have a Discord Server for the purposes of planning and gaining support. If you think you would be interested, you can always join the server. But once the wiki is operational, I will provide an update with a link to it, so that users here can post romhack documentation! Thanks for your time, Wraith (talk) 17:20, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

Main page layout change

Do you think it looks fine or was it better before? OmegαToαd64 Toadsig.png 10:39, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

HTML

Just so people are aware, I've been asking all the wikis in our hosting to switch to more modern HTML standards. So, please don't reverse these changes. Tacopill (talk) 12:51, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

Alright thanks for the heads up. I'll make sure to remember. OmegαToαd64 Toadsig.png 13:02, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

resize main page sprites

The sprites on the main page look too small: the Ninten sprite.png, Lucas stand, and Ness sprite.png. Anyone want to get rid of the 15px, 20px? Results May Vary (talk) 04:35, 17 September 2020 (UTC)

I fixed it. OmegαToαd64 Toadsig.png 04:44, 17 September 2020 (UTC)

Suggestion for licensing

Currently our licenses on the site are as follows:

  • Copyright
  • Public domain

This is not particularly descriptive for either type of licensing. This is why I suggest expanding into the following:

  • Copyright splits into
    • Artwork
    • Game sprite
    • Game screenshot
    • Scanned (such as guides or game covers)
    • Audio
    • Video (if applicable)
    • Copyright (miscellaneous)
  • Public domain splits into:
    • Public domain
    • Unsure
    • No license
  • Potentially look into a Creative Commons template that uses variable switches depending on the type used, for example {{CC-BY-SA|3.0}} renders the creative commons standard attribution 3 license.

For those concerned this would be too much work to change existing files, unfortunately a majority of the 400 images I have dealt with in the past few days contain no licensing whatsoever. The introduction of more specific licensing, especially if sources can be more standardized, will help demonstrate why we believe files are fair use as well as being able to automatically categorize images by type. Most other wikis use this in practice to great success. Anyone have any thoughts? Trig - 15:03, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

I think that's a great idea! I've also noticed a lot of files have no licensing and it would be great to have more specific ones to use when adding licensing to them (as well as updating files with existing licensing). ~ AlexBot2004 (Talk) 15:11, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

Ads when logged in?

Does anyone else get ads when logged in? Until recently ads wouldn't show when I'm logged in, it is actually causing problems when editing by slowing things down or accidentally clicking an ad when trying to view a preview. If there is a way to remove the ads then I would appreciate the help. OmegαToαd64 Toadsig.png 00:49, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

The code we had in place to not show ads for logged in users, had to be commented out due to a compatibility issue that pops up when you update MediaWiki to 1.35. We'll put it back in once we figure out a way how to do so. Tacopill (talk) 02:41, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
Alright that's ok thanks for the help. OmegαToαd64 Toadsig.png 06:07, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

Updating

We will be updating WikiBound to version 1.35 tomorrow. During this time, the wiki will be locked. At best, the process should take about a half hour. Alex95 (talk) 17:18, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
