Scaraba is a desert region in EarthBound. It is located in the Chommo region and divided into two areas: the town in the north and a vast desert in the south. Scaraba has a population of 3,212 people and 2 camels, and the average age is 112. The average temperature of 140°F in the shade, and an annual rainfall of none.

According to the Hieroglyphs from the Scaraba Cultural Museum, the region was historically polytheistic. Scaraba was invaded roughly 1000 years ago, presumably by another member of Giygas's species. The Pyramid was constructed by the residents of Scaraba for protection, but they were easily defeated. The Sphinx is probably a representation of a guardian deity in Scaraba.

Overview

Scaraba consists of two segments: North Scaraba and South Scaraba. In the north is the town and an open desert area with pyramids. The town is found in the northernmost area of the region and features a Hotel, Shop, Bazaar and Dock. Areas of the town with darker coloured sand count as part of the desert, and can result in sunstroke. South of the town are several pyramids. The largest one is guarded by the Sphinx who will allow the player to enter by stepping on the circles in the correct order. The order matches the pattern described by the hieroglyphs found in the Scaraba Cultural Museum and its copy, forming star shaped pattern.

Traversing through the Pyramid is the only way to access South Scaraba. The south area is almost completely uninhabited, however the Dungeon Man can be found in the north. The far south of the area isa large body of water that seperated Scaraba Deep Darkness.

Role in EarthBound

Ness and his friends arrive here after defeating the Kraken while travelling on a boat from Toto. Their goal is to find the Hawk Eye found inside of the Pyramid. The Sphinx who guards it awaits the chosen hero who can solve the puzzle to open the Pyramid. Using the knowledge from the hieroglyphs read in the museum in Summers, Ness steps on the circles in a star pattern and was allowed to enter.

After finding the Hawk Eye they exit on the south area of Scaraba. The Star Master greets them on the outside, and explains that Poo must leave for a short time to learn the Way of the Starstorm. Once Poo leaves the group speaks to a man nearby who provides them with the Key to the tower, which is used to access the Dungeon Man in the north. The team meets Brick Road at the top, who was combined with the dungeon itself and agrees to follow the team for a shorter time. At the narrow passage south he gets caught in the palm trees, however he offers the team to use his submarine to travel across the water to reach the next destination: Deep Darkness.

Great Southern International Resort Hotel

The Hotel in Scaraba charges $400 per person for a one-night stay in their super deluxe suites when Ness, Paula, Jeff and Poo arrive there.

Hospital

Reviving an unconscious party member charges $200. The healer at the hospital charges $150 for softening when being diamondized, $140 for healing paralysis, and $130 for exorcising ghosts from any party member. A checkup for other status ailments by the doctor charges $80.
