Paula is a girl from the town of Twoson, who is kidnapped by Pokey and members of the Happy Happy Cult and must be saved by Ness. She has considerably more advanced psychic powers than Ness, shown to be able to use telepathy and being able to sense where to go next on occasion. Paula seems to be well-known throughout Twoson for her psychic abilities and helping out at the preschool.
She can also use the "pray" command in-battle, which has a large amount of random effects. Among these effects include restoring HP to party members, making both enemies and the party cry, and reviving both unconscious party members and enemies. The prayer command is also required to defeat Giygas in the final battle.
In EarthBound
In EarthBound, Ness goes to the town of Twoson. He then goes to the Polestar Preschool. Here, he meets Paula's parents and finds out that she had a dream about him. That night, Ness stays in the Twoson hotel. He receives a message through telepathy from Paula asking for Ness to save her. He finds her in a prison in Peaceful Rest Valley, and beats Mr. Carpainter to get the key for Paula. At this point, Paula joins the party. In Fourside, she is kidnapped again, this time by Mr. Monotoli. She is then rescued after the Mani-Mani Statue is destroyed. After the game is beaten, she gets a letter from the students of Polestar Preschool.
