Learned by Ana

PK Beam is a PSI attack, only appearing in EarthBound Beginnings. It has a variety of effects between ranks, such as doing damage to a single enemy, or even instantly knocking out an enemy altogether. Only Ana can learn PK Beam.

PK Beam γ is reflected by the Franklin Badge.

PK Beam does less damage against metallic enemies.

Overview

PK Beam does not belong to a specific element but instead is a psychic beam that is fired at the target. It is the most powerful single-target PSI attack in the game, with PK Beam γ being a one-hit KO attack that instantly KOs a target reguardless of the amount of HP they have. The first three tiers of PK Beam are a single-target attack, and Ω attacks all opponents on screen. PK Beam Ω is the strongest non OHKO attack in the game dealing 100-210 damage.

Because PK Beam does not belong to an element, there is no pendant that can protect the player from it, not even the Sea Pendant. However the Franklin Badge will reflect PK Beam γ back at the enemy, additionally mechanical enemies are resistant to PK Beam and are also immune to γ altogether.

Lloyd's Laser Beam and Plasma Beam are funcionally the equivalent to PK Beam α and β respectively.

Learnset and damage output

In EarthBound Beginnings

Rank Effect PP Characters Level learned
α 28-32 points of damage to one enemy 4 Ana 5
β 70-85 points of damage to one enemy 7 Ana 11
γ Instantly knock out one enemy 12 Ana 25
Ω 100-210 points of damage to all enemies 24 Ana 33

In later games

PK Beam is the only offensive PSI attack that does not return in EarthBound and Mother 3, however it is likely to have been replaced with Ness and Lucas's respective favorite things PSI Rockin and PK Love, as they are also PSI based offensive PSI attacks that do not belong to an element, similar to PK Beam. The only difference is that all tiers are multi-target whereas only PK Beam Ω targets all opponents. Additionally PK Beam γ's one-hit KO property is present in PK Flash.

In the Super Smash Bros. series

The Starman assist trophy is able to use PK Beam in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. When summoned it attacks opponents with either PK Beam γ or Ω, in these games γ is single-target while Ω sends a barrage of beams. Additionally the Starman enemy in the Smash Run mode exclusive to Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS also uses PK Beam. In this mode PK Beam can be reflected back at the Starman for a one-hit KO referencing PK Beam γ being a one-hit KO, as well as Starmen being vulnerable to it.
