Poo leaves the party temporarily with the Star Master to learn PK Starstorm α after they exit the pyramid in southern Scaraba, and later comes back with his new power in the middle of a fight against Master Barf in Deep Darkness. He gains PK Starstorm Ω at the Cave of the Past shortly before the party is turned into robots and transferred back in time to defeat Giygas.

In the Super Smash Bros. series
PK Starstorm becomes Ness's and Lucas's final smash in this game. According to trophy information, Ness was taught the move by Poo and Lucas was by Kumatora. Possibly due to this, Lucas's PK Starstorm is differently shaped than Ness's. The move has many meteors falling in random areas of the screen, doing a big amount of damage to those hurt. Both Ness and Lucas have PK Starstorm as their final smash in Smash 4 as well, only now they can have control over the where the meteors fall, albeit they are concentrated into a smaller area now.
Boney is one of the main characters in Mother 3. He lives with Flint and his family, and first appears in Chapter 1.

In Mother 3
History
spoiler
In Chapter 1
Boney's first appearance is in Chapter 1, before Flint goes inside of Sunshine Forest to search for his family. He decides to take Boney along with him, who fights alongside him in battles. Reaching a dead end at Mt. Oriander, Boney is used as a messenger of sorts, when Wess ties a yellow ribbon around his neck and is told to go find Duster. The yellow ribbon is a special message of sorts, and Wess is positive that Duster will know what it means. He successfully finds him, asleep in his house, although Boney ends up having to drag Duster along the ground for half of the trip before he wakes up. Duster, using his Thief Tools, allows the party to scale the cliff, where Flint, Boney, and Duster find the Pigmask Army tampering with a caribou. After defeating the caribou, Boney is taken aside while Flint hears the news about his wife. Boney remains in his doghouse for the remainder of Chapter 1, Chapter 2, and Chapter 3.
In Chapter 4
Boney offers to take Lucas for a walk. The party learns that the bassist in the DCMC, Lucky, looks a lot like Duster, and is performing at Club Titiboo. Traveling across the Railway, Boney smells something along the way, and begins barking, leading Lucas to Ionia, who teaches Lucas to use PSI. At the end of the Railway, a Ropeway denies entry without tickets, forcing Lucas to get a part-time job at the Factory, where Boney runs on a treadmill to help supply power, loudly barking and disrupting the other animals. With Lucas receiving his reward, the two ride the Ropeway to Club Titiboo, but the bodyguards don't let them in, because children and dogs aren't allowed. Dressing Boney in a costume, the two try again, only to have Violet, the waitress at Club Titiboo, tell the bodyguards to let them in. Violet reveals herself to be Kumatora, and the three plan to meet after the show. After the DCMC concert, Kumatora leads them through a tunnel leading to an attic. At the end of the dungeon, the two defeat the Jealous Bass and its cohorts, and the two drop to Lucky's room, where Kumatora and Duster join Lucas's party.
In Chapter 5
Boney removes his disguise and begins walking on four legs again. Searching for the Egg of Light, the party comes across the Clayman that Duster had hidden it in - however, it is promptly struck by lightning, activating it as it runs off. Giving chase, Lucas is mistaken for the Pigmask Army's commander, and his party are given pig masks. They are given a Pork Bean to traverse the Highway, but it slips on a banana peel on the way, demolishing it. The Fierce Pork Trooper offers his Pork Bean, but then recognizes Lucas and Boney from Club Titiboo. After defeating him, they continue to chase the Clayman, finally catching up with it at the dump. The Forlorn Junk Heap then attacks the party before they can retrieve the egg. After defeating it, the party finally retrieves the Hummingbird Egg, restoring Duster's memory. Lucas, still being mistaken for the commander, is escorted along with his party to Thunder Tower. Midway through the tower, they find the Fierce Pork Trooper again, this time in his battle suit. After defeating him, Fassad interrupts them, and their cover is blown. They flee further up the tower. At the top, an alarm goes off, and Mr. Genetor attacks the party. With Mr. Genetor destroyed, they reach the top of the tower, where Fassad finally catches up. Taunting them, Fassad orders the tower be destroyed with them still on it, and calls the Mother Porkship to pick him up. Fassad then slips on a banana peel, injuring him. Using the Rope Snake, Lucas's group latches onto the ship, with the Masked Man looming over. Rope Snake's jaw doesn't hold, and Lucas's party is separated.
In Chapter 6
Lucas finds Boney nearby where he lands in the Sunflower Fields. Both of them see an apparition of Hinawa, guiding them off a cliff.
In Chapter 7
Lucas and Boney land in a pile of hay, where Alec and Wess were told to pile it in their dreams by Hinawa. Both of them wake up at the Old Man's Paradise, and find Ionia outside, tied up. They stand Ionia up and the three travel to Aeolia's house. Aeolia disappears in front of them, and Ionia guides them to the first of the Seven Needles, already pulled. Upon entering the Chimera laboratory Boney puts on a Pigmask helmet as does Lucas. While being chased by the Ultimate Chimera, Dr. Andonuts suggests using Boney as bait. After the Ultimate Chimera's defeat, Boney will chase after Andonuts as revenge for his suggestion. After saving Salsa, Lucas and co. meet up with Doria and Kumatora. Kumatora will introduce everyone in the players party, including Duster if the player saves him before Salsa, but has to ask Lucas for Boney's name. If the player chooses to go to Snowcap mountain before saving Duster or Kumatora, Boney will have a few additional lines of dialogue. Same with Tanetane island, and Saturn Valley. In Tanetane island, Boney will be the only one who won't eat the mushrooms. Despite this his hp will still recover. He also refuses to go into the hot spring in the island, due to him being able to see it for what it really is. On the way through Argilla pass, Lucas will drop the jar of yummy pickles and it's up to Boney to retrieve them! This is the only time the player will be able to control Boney by himself. Whenever Boney finds something shiny, he'll pick it up in his mouth and bring it to Lucas who'll identify what it is Boney has found. If Boney found the yummy pickles then the player will stop controlling Boney by himself as they regroup.

In Chapter 8
Arriving in New Pork City, the party travels to a theater, where Boney smells a stinkbug. Chasing it, Boney finds the apartment complex in the sewers underneath Arcade 1-Up. Lucas, Duster, and Kumatora are lead there by a man in the arcade who claims he hears a dog barking in the sewers below. Boney leads the party to Leder, who explains the history of the Nowhere Islands, committing it to a key. The party traverses the sewers again, interrupted by Fassad again, with even more horns. Defeating him, Fassad drops into the sewers, and his Interpreter flies off, claiming she has no quarrel with them. Boney will stick with the party for the rest of the game right up until the final battle where he is taken out of commission, along with Duster and Kumatora.
Special abilities
:See also: Check, Spy

Boney's special ability is to Sniff (Japanese: においをかぐ Sniff) out any weaknesses and resistances a given enemy may have, listing off the enemy's "type", one PSI weakness and one resistance when used. This technique works similarly to Jeff's ability to spy on enemies and the Check command, although unlike spying or Checking, it does not list off the enemy's stats or a description. There are some enemies which Boney can't sniff such as the Forlorn Junk Heap or Miracle Fassad.
A list of glitches appearing in the Mother series.
In Mother
Bread Crumbs Glitch
A glitch involving the use of bread crumbs allows the player to reach an out-of-bounds area of the map in the original Mother. To activate the glitch, Ninten must never use bread crumbs, and then must subsequently rescue Pippi. If Pippi starts a trail of crumbs and then is delivered safely to the mayor, the player can choose to talk to her to obtain the items from her. Since each character has a separate variable for bread crumbs, and Ninten has not used them yet to set the variable, the crumbs that Pippi hands back to him lead to the default location on the map. The glitch can be canceled by using the Map in certain locations, which can be used to skip a large section of the game. If the player moves too far in any direction, the game will create large amounts of glitched blocks that Ninten cannot pass through.

This glitch was fixed in the English prototype and Mother 1+2.
Teleport Music Glitch
When the player fails to teleport through a spot that would normally change music, such as from the Yucca Desert to Youngtown, the music playing before the teleport will continue, even after passing the music-change point.

This glitch was not fixed in the English prototype or the Mother 1+2 port.
Poltergeist Music Glitch
If the player saves the game while Ninten's home is under attack by the poltergeist, then defeats the Doll and does not save, being knocked unconscious will cause the poltergeist music to replay. This is due to how the game stores the saved location, as it also saves the current music playing. Entering a different room causes the music to return to normal

This glitch was not fixed in the English prototype or the Mother 1+2 port.

Flea Bag Glitch
For reasons unknown, the Flea Bag (occasionally dropped by Stray Dogs) is capable of working on non-organic enemies such as Nancys or Starmen. This glitch can be used to stall the fights against R7038 and R7038XX to the point where the maximum limit of 255 turns is reached, ending the battle. This can be used to avoid losing Teddy or EVE, yet will cause graphical glitches to occur (keeping EVE causes her to take the appearance of a stack of 3 NPCs that appear in the area she is currently in [sans Mt. Itoi], and keeping Teddy causes the entire party to become permanently invisible). This glitch is fixed in the English prototype and MOTHER 1+2.

In EarthBound
Rock Candy/Condiment Glitch
With a Rock Candy or other food item and a condiment, it is possible to reuse the item an infinite number of times, only using the condiment. To do this, the food item must be at the bottom of the player's inventory. The player should then enter a battle and use the item. The condiment will be used, but the food item will not, allowing infinite recovery or status-enhancement. If any stat becomes higher than 255, the stat will underflow to zero.
Staircase Glitch
In EarthBound, when a player is at low HP on the overworld from poisoning, they receive a message warning them that a character is low on health. If this message is shown when stepping onto or off of a staircase, the player can walk through all walls. Ness's party's movement direction is fixed at the direction in which the message appeared. To fix the glitch, the player must walk to the bottom of another staircase. This was fixed in the Mother 1+2 version of the game.

Threed Tent Bug
A small section of the tent in Threed causes slowdown related to text when Checking it. If checked enough times, it may output long strings of random text, or occasionally, will leave text in the foreground of the screen, even after the text string ends. If the player repeatedly does this, it will eventually activate one of the game's debug menus.

The menu is untranslated; instead, it uses the first letter of the intended Japanese syllable. The menu includes a party selector, sound test, Hint Shop text selector, item description tester, teleport location tester, inventory item selector, Status ailment tester, and a menu working similarly to the Mother 3 Debug Room that takes the player to specific sections of the game, including the ending.

This glitch was fixed in the Mother 1+2 version of the game.

Shattered Man and Runaway Five Glitch
During the end of the game and when waiting on the Runaway Five's bus, there are no enemies on the entire map. An oversight leaves scripted battles such as the Sanctuary Boss battles working as normally; however, if Ness's entire party is knocked unconscious, the game will loop the game over screen indefinitely or freeze on a single screen with graphical glitches. However, the player will eventually be transported back to the overworld, with everyone in their party as ghosts. Should they leave the building where they spawned in, the graphics will become temporarily distorted before returning to normal. Both glitches were fixed in Mother 1+2 by separate methods; the Shattered Men disappear after completion of the game, while the game-over code has been modified to account for Mondo Mole.

Diamondized Glitch
When teleporting, if a character is diamondized, hitting a wall will cause all characters to appear diamondized for a split second.

Text-based Glitches
Happy-Happyist's Lair Glitch
If the player Talks to a present through the command menu rather than Checking it, it will output the text, "(There's no response.)," rather than the normal "Who are you talking to?" This is due to the room-specific coding intended for the non-sprite Happy-Happyists in the background. After defeating Mr. Carpainter, the room functions normally.

Simultaneous Defeat glitch
If all of the party members and enemies die at the same time, the game will proceed to giving experience points. However, since none of the characters are alive, the game will attempt to divide it between the zero living characters, which will underflow to a very large number. Since no characters are alive, however, nobody actually receives this experience.

Threed NPC Glitch
Due to improper event flag settings, two NPCs are not fully implemented into the game. Oddly, while riding on a bus, one of the NPCs can be seen as intended; however, since he cannot be talked to, his line is rendered unused.

Exit Mouse Glitch
In the Japanese version, the Exit Mouse can be used to successfully leave the Cave of the Past and return to the entrance of the dungeon where the Exit Mouse is obtained. This glitch was fixed in the U.S. release, yet is still present in MOTHER 1+2, albeit under different conditions (see below).

In Mother 1+2
Exit mouse glitch
In Mother 1+2, a newly-introduced glitch allows the player to exit the Cave of the Past by using an Exit mouse in the final room where Giygas resides. After doing this, Ness's party are no longer robots, and appear at the entrance to whichever dungeon that the mouse was obtained in. Doing this, the locations in the game are already prepared for the ending, playing the music used during the prayer sequence.

If the player chooses to return to Saturn Valley, they can reenter the Phase Distorter with no negative consequences. If this is done, the events proceed mostly as normal; however, the scene in which Dr. Andonuts pulls Ness aside is skipped, instead skipping directly to the sequence in which the party is transformed into robots. Additionally, Poo will relearn PK Starstorm Ω from the Star Master.

Poisoned Giygas glitch
If Ness or one of his party members uses a snake on Giygas in the final battle, it will still damage him normally. If Giygas dies to the poison, the game fades out with the background still Giygas's lair. Ness's family can be seen in the positioning on the screen where they would be in Ness's home in the ending.

In Mother 3
New Game+ Glitch
If the player creates a new game, sometimes data is not fully erased from the previously loaded file. This results in Lucas and Kumatora retaining their PSI attacks, even before Lucas gains his PSI abilities, with Lucas and Salsa equipped with the equipment from the previous file. If the player unequips these items, they disappear permanently, as they were not in the main inventory. Additionally, Lucas's equipment will return to normal in Chapter 4, as he then gains the Easy-Grip Stick in his weapon slot. He retains his PSI for the duration of the game, however.
Present Status ailment Glitch
Occasionally, opening the Map or Status menus will temporarily change a gift box onscreen into a status ailment icon. Moving into a different area, opening the map, or checking the status menu again will fix the glitch.
Tanetane Island Sludge Pond Glitch
If Lucas becomes Feverish and enters the sludge pond west of Mixolydia's home, his sprite can temporarily be changed to that of Boney. When the fever dies down, if the player goes into the PSI menu, after exiting the menu, Lucas will look identical to Boney. Going into a menu or entering a battle will fix the glitch. Saving the game will preserve the glitch, however.
Tanetane Island Cave Glitch
Improper layer settings cause the graphics of the Barrier Trio cave entrance to be displayed over the character sprites rather than behind them.
Thunder Tower Save Frog Glitch
In the upper floor of Thunder Tower, a Save Frog roams around the room using a balloon. However, because it will not move when it is touching Lucas or his companions, it is possible to save the game using the frog and remain stuck between the frog and the wall, forcing them to restart the game.
Underwater glitch
While underwater, you can prolong the amount of oxygen you have by repeatedly bringing up the status bar, as oxygen will only drain when the oxygen bar is present.
Duster Combo Sound Glitch
While each character has six sound sets for Sound Battles, Duster's sound sets are incorrectly applied to him, making only his first sound set used. An optional additional patch for the Mother 3 fan translation fixes this error.
Text-based Glitches
Dr. Andonuts' Trash Can Text Glitch
The trash can outside of the Chimera Lab is associated with the wrong block of text. The glitched line is the same as the sign referring to the location of the Murasaki Forest hot spring. The intended line refers to the doughnut crumbs in the bottom of the trash can, referencing Dr. Andonuts. This is intended to be fixed in v1.2 of the Mother 3 fan translation.
Aeolia-Ionia Name Glitch
In the scene at Aeolia's home in Chapter 7, Ionia's name appears instead of Aeolia's in the name box despite Aeolia being the speaker. This was fixed for v1.1 in the Mother 3 fan translation.
Introduced in the Mother 3 fan translation
Menu Scrolling Glitch
When scrolling too fast through the item menu or another similar menu, sometimes the text will not clear on the screen, only replacing text filled by the new text option. It can be fixed by changing to a different menu or closing the menu and re-opening it, and has no effect on gameplay.
Name Summary Slowdown Glitch
After naming characters, a fade out occurs. The audio and game slow down considerably, due to the sprite text welding system implemented in the translation.
The Mecha-Drago (Japanese: メカドラゴ Mecha-Drago) is a reconstructed Drago that appears in Mother 3. It appeared when Hinawa, Claus, and Lucas were visiting Alec, Hinawa's father and Lucas's and Claus's grandfather. It killed Hinawa, and Claus tried to get revenge on it, disappearing in the forest for three years. It is the boss of Chapter 1.
Sound Battles are a combo system built into Mother 3's battle engine.
In Mother 3
When a character uses their basic attack command, pressing the A button or L button in time with the beat of the music will allow them to achieve extra hits, which are each weaker than the initial hit. To hear the exact timing to press the button, an enemy must be asleep, which allows the player to hear their heartbeat, with each beat representing when to hit the button. A character can get a maximum of 16 hits per-turn; if this occurs, a sound effect of a cheering crowd is played. The Battle Memory is a method to practice Sound Battles.

Each playable party member has a different instrument for their combo attacks.
Memo
"Press the button with the music rhythm, whaddya get? A feeling so enlivening you'll never forget!"

Trivia
*While Duster only has a single combo sound set, there are others in the sound data for the game which are not correctly applied to him. These have been restored via hacking as an additional patch for the Mother 3 fan translation.
The Absolutely Safe Capsule (Japanese: ぜったいあんぜんカプセル Absolutely Safe Capsule) appears in Mother 3, as an invention whose creation was assisted by Dr. Andonuts and the Mr. Saturns.
In Mother 3
In Chapter 8
It is used by Porky. After being sealed, however, it cannot be opened again nor destroyed, leaving Porky trapped in it for eternity, as he is immortal; Porky taunts Lucas while in the capsule by sticking his tongue out, but otherwise the capsule has no attacks. Dr. Andonuts explains that not only is it absolutely safe for Porky inside, but for anything outside of it that Porky may damage. If examined, Dr. Andonuts will ask the player if they would like to roll it around. The player bumps into the Absolutely Safe Capsule in the ending.
Trivia
*Though all attacks do zero damage to it, getting a combo will state that a total of (combo number) damage was done.
Magic Butterflies (Japanese: マジックバタフライ Magic Butterfly) appear in EarthBound and Mother 3. They restore 20 PP to everyone with PSI in the party. Magic Butterflies are common in EarthBound, frequently found roaming around areas. However, in Mother 3, they are more rare, and can be found either by examining certain objects, or roaming around an area. According to the memo in Mother 3, the relaxation effect is activating by touching the Magic Butterfly's wings. Certain Magic Butterflies will infinitely re-spawn in both games.

Hot springs (Japanese: おんせん Hot springs) are a method of healing, first introduced in EarthBound.
In EarthBound
A hot spring can be found in Saturn Valley and Tenda Village, which heals status problems. After an earthquake in the Lost Underworld, two different types of hot springs may erupt out of the ground; a red one or a blue one. The blue ones restore HP, while the red ones cure most status ailments.
In Mother 3
Hot springs are one of two main ways of healing in Mother 3. Hot springs heal HP and PP within a matter of seconds, but aren't as fast as Instant Revitalizing Devices. Hot springs can be found all over the Nowhere Islands. Occasionally, an old man will appear in a hot spring, and ask "Yes?" when spoken to. Much more rarely, a lady appears, who says "Mixed gender bathing?" upon being spoken to.
Memo
"When you're tired from battle, feeling numb, or stricken with poison, nothing beats a dip in a hot spring.
Trivia
*After eating hallucination-inducing mushrooms on Tanetane Island, if Lucas and company go into the "hot spring" and see the old man, he will take on the appearance of Fassad.
*Similarly, the hot spring lady will take on the appearance of Ionia.
*In the Player's Guide, the red hot spring is erroneously stated to recover HP, where it actually restores status problems; its purpose is stated correctly in a diagram below this error.

The party learns that the bassist in the DCMC, Lucky, looks a lot like Duster, in is performing at Club Titiboo.
Kumatora will introduce everyone in the payers party, including Duster if the player saves him before Salsa, but has to ask Lucas for Boney's name.
This technique works similarly to Jeff's ability to spy on enemies and the Check command, although unlike spying or Checking, it does not list off the enemy's stats or a description.

The party learns that the bassist in the DCMC, Lucky, looks a lot like Duster, in is performing at Club Titiboo.

When a character is feeling strange, they will choose battle commands at random, sometimes attacking other party members.
Nausea
When a character is Nauseous (alternatively Sick) they can't eat any food.
Memo
Numbness
When a character is Numb, they will sometimes be unable to use the basic bash attack. The effect wears off after battle.
Memo
Turned around
Being turned around can only happen to enemies. This prevents a large majority of enemies from attacking, however, a single enemy, the Mecha-Turtle, can use this status effect as an advantage, having weapons on its back. Another enemy, the Whatever, can turn around in the middle of a battle, however, this is beneficial for the player, rather than the enemy. Being turned around can occur in four ways; using a Made-You-Look, Siren Beetle, encountering an enemy from behind, or with a random chance, Duster may deftly flip behind an enemy at the start of a battle.

Jealous
The Fierce Pork Trooper and other members of the Pigmask Army can be affected by jealousy. It prevents them from taking any action for several turns, and is caused by using DCMC items on them.
Having a sunstroke has similar effects to having a cold, losing about 4 HP at the beginning of every turn. It also lingers on the overworld, taking away 4 HP as one walks around. It only occurs when a character is walking around in the Dusty Dunes Desert, or around Scaraba.
Crying
When a character is crying, their accuracy is lowered temporarily. The effect wears off after battle.
Memo
" This mark displayed on the battle screen is an indication of crying. Crying causes the vision to blur, so it will be hard to land an attack. Use Eye Drops to stop those tears right up."

Feeling strange
When a character is feeling strange, they will choose battle commands at random, sometimes attacking other party members.
Memo
" This mark displayed onscreen is an indication of feeling strange. Feeling strange will result in the inability to walk straight and cause complete confusion as to what one is doing in battle. It's a terribly bothersome condition, but one smack on the head with a Paper Fan will bring you to your senses.
Fleas
When a character has fleas, they can't use any PSI.
Memo
" This mark displayed onscreen is an indication of fleas. The blood-sucking fleas will cause a lot of trouble when the overwhelming itchiness results in the loss of a turn... ...or the inability to concentrate on using PSI. Use a shot of Flea Spray to exterminate the pests."
Forgetful
When a character is Forgetful, they can't use any special techniques, such as Monkey Tricks and Thief Tools, as well as PSI. The effect wears off after battle.
Memo
" This mark displayed onscreen is an indication of forgetfulness. Everyone has a little brain fart once in a while, even when it comes to PSI. Use a Reminder when suffering forgetfulness, and it should come back to you."
Nausea
When a character is Nauseous (alternatively Sick) they can't eat any food.
Memo
" This mark displayed onscreen is an indication of nausea. Nausea results in a loss of appetite and makes the character unable to eat anything. Fresh herbs will restore any lost appetite."
Numbness
When a character is Numb, they will sometimes be unable to use the basic bash attack. The effect wears off after battle.
Memo
" This mark displayed onscreen is an indication of numbness. Numbness prevents the character from moving or acting while in combat. Anti-Paralysis is effective against numbness."
Poisoned
When a character is Poisoned, they will take damage when walking on the overworld, and in battle they will take damage every turn.
Memo
" This mark displayed onscreen is an indication of poisoning. HP will drop automatically while walking around. Use an Antidote to heal."

Sleeping
When a character is Sleeping, they can't take any action until they wake up. The effect wears off after battle. While an enemy is sleeping, a "heartbeat" can be heard, telling the player when to press the A button or L button to achieve extra hits with a basic attack.
Memo
" This mark displayed on the battle screen is an indication of sleep. Being asleep during battle prevents the character from taking any action. No matter how sleepy, one ring of the Alarm Cicada should pop one's eyes awake."

Flaming
When a character is caught in flames, they will take damage every turn. The effect wears off after battle.
Unconscious

When a character is unconscious, they can't perform any actions. If the whole party is unconscious, it results in a game over. Unconsciousness can only be healed by Cups of Lifenoodles, Secret Herbs, Healing γ or Healing Ω.

Whenever a cutscene, such as entering a hot spring, swinging on the Rope Snake, is triggered all unconscious characters are revived with one hp.

Feverish
When a character is feeling feverish, the party will not be able to run in the overworld. After walking for a certain amount of time, the feverish character will learn a PSI technique, and the status will wear off. The status itself has no actual effect in-battle.
