Talk:Porky Minch

Should this be moved to Porky Minch? Porky is the most recent name, and Minch is his last name. A 15:49, 2 October 2010 (MDT)

Hmm... Yeah. 'Minch' should be at least included in the article title, and since Porky's technically used more than Pokey (SSBB, Japanese games) and actually is the more logical name, anyway... →Tinā δ 16:01, 2 October 2010 (MDT)
So, does everyone agree that the page name should be changed to Porky Minch, then? Because I'd like to see some action happen concerning this. :7 Sun Braid 05:44, 15 June 2011 (EDT)

Yes, please. The inconsistency is rather bothersome. Once someone else agrees, I'll move the page and run a find/replace on links. →Tinā δ 23:59, 16 July 2011 (EDT)

Porky's "Honesty" in the Japanese Version of EarthBound/Mother 2

I made an account just to speak about a finding regarding a section in this article I don't think is true.

I've been doing a fair amount of research about the theory that Porky's apology in Happy Happy Village was genuine in the Japanese version, and changed in the localization to Porky lying. However, what I've found in my opinion shows the theory to be completely baseless.

I was able to have someone from Japan (who teaches English there) translate the specific passage from Japanese to English. This is what it reads:

* That was incredible.
  I feel like I'm awake now, too.
  Let's be friends again.
* C'mon, answer me.
  I'll be good, so...
  ...It's no use.
* Bleeeeh! [sticking out tongue]
  I was just kidding! I'll be seeing you someday!

The localization, in comparison, reads as so:

* What a horrible nightmare. I somehow woke up.
  Ness, let's be friends again.
* Please answer me. I promise to be good.
  ...uh ...okay?
* Hah! I lied! See you sucker!"

I honestly, truly do not see any legitimate differences between the two passages. The most is that maybe the Japanese version makes it clearer that Porky's possibly waiting for some kind of response (but I think it's pretty clear in both), but regardless, both come out saying that he was lying. "See you sucker" is an American figure of speech, hence why it appears there and not in Japanese (the person I got to translate this said that they believe Porky was, in fact, lying).

Additionally, the Legends of Localization book and website fail to reference any sort of hidden change/meaning from an honest Porky to a lying one from Japanese to English, nor have I found an interview with Itoi stating any evidence to the contrary, that Porky was being honest and was genuinely hurt by Ness's silence, irrevocably damaging his "friendship" with Ness.

Given the fact no citation has been provided, the original passage doesn't really support this theory, Clyde "Tomato" Mandelin has never referenced it in his very thorough documentation of EarthBound's changes in the West, and that no interview with Itoi exists where he states this to be true, I believe this section mentioning this supposed change from Mother 2 should be removed from the article. I've seen far too many people misinformed about this myth regarding Porky's character.

I've been waiting for someone to finally put a conclusion on the theory. I honestly started doubting its legitimacy as well since I couldn't find much solid evidence to confirm if it's true or false. Turns out it's pretty obvious he was lying in the Japanese version as well so it's time for that line to go. OmegαToαd64 Toadsig.png 23:33, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
